The days went on slowly. Candace had to make up the midterms she missed and Eric and Darien were hanging out a bit more. Although it took a while for them to get used to each other’s scent, the two seemed to be getting along swimmingly, mostly because Darien was grateful to Eric for covering for him with Candace, and Eric was grateful that Darien was slowly, but surely easing off of his infatuation with Candace.
Eric yawned as he sat back in one of the chairs the adorned the hallway, outside the school’s library. His eyes were closed and the chair was leaned back on the back legs as he drifted in and out of a half sleep. It wasn’t exactly exciting for him to wait an hour after class for Candace to finish her make-up exams. The sound of the new doors of the library slamming shut sent him forward and back to reality.
“Catching up on your beauty sleep, hun?” Candace asked with a small smirk playing across her face.
“Why? Would you like me to be better looking?” He asked, skeptically.
“Well, I guess you could stand to be a bit better looking.”
“Gee thanks. Now I know how you really feel.”
“Nooo, I’m kidding. I love you, just the way you are.” She said, hugging him around the middle.
“Alright, alright, I believe you, now let’s get you home, or your mom will have my head.” Eric joked, picking up his school bag and heading for the stairs.
“Ugh, I don’t feel like walking home.” Candace whined.
“Well, I’d drive, but my car’s at home. I’m usually eco-friendly in the morning.”
“You werewolves and the economy,” Candace remarked, rolling her eyes, playfully.
“Eh, I’ll drive in one day, maybe a Friday. That way, you and I can go out after school without having to worry too much about getting home before dark.”
“That would be nice.”
There was no reason for Eric to stick around at Candace’s house this afternoon. Her mom was home, so Candace would have to clean her own bandages. Eric simply went for a walk for a while, before going to the clan’s mansion.
“I’m home.” Eric called into the open living space.
“Hey,” A dainty hand waved from the couch as he came forward, along with a tackle hug from Sonia.
“Hello,” She said, just as bubbly as ever. Eric couldn’t help but laugh as he tried to pick himself up.
“Will there ever be a day I can’t escape an attack from you, Sonia?” He asked, matting down her shoulder-length hair.
“Nope, I’m always gonna get’cha” She giggled, pretending to snap her teeth at him.
Eric couldn’t even reach Reya on the couch before Chris got to him.
“Hey, we need to talk.” He said, grabbing Eric’s shoulder and leading him to the garage.
“What is it this time?” Eric asked, remembering that the last time that had a discussion like this was when Eric wanted to tell Candace about them being wolves.
“You’re becoming attached to those bloodsuckers.” Chris said, getting straight to the point. “You reek of them and it’s making me worry.”
Eric sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Chris, chill, Everything is okay. There’s no need for alarm.”
“And what if one of them decides to snap your neck or something when you’re not looking?” Chris asked, giving him a skeptic look.
“Look, I’m not having this discussion.” Eric paused as he got up. “Besides, they won’t break the treaty. They don’t have the nerve.”
Eric walked out of the garage and to his room in the mansion. He decided to just sleep things off for a while, even considering taking a day off from school. He sighed as he fell into a nice, deep sleep.

And as my cheeks ran with cold tears, I noticed that they were not all my own. Rain fell from the dark clouds overhead, hitting my face.
At that moment, I realized something:
"Even the heavens weep for the dead."
