Eric was on his phone as he sped off towards the next stop on the map Darien was reading over.
“Huh, Charlie, what are you-?“ Eric was cut off by a scream from a familiar voice on the other end.
“Wait a minute, let her-“ Again, he was cut off, this time by the beeping of the line going dead.
“Who was it?” Darien asked.
“Howling Moon Hotel, where is it?” He demanded, staring at the road.
“Just a couple miles west, why?”
“Hold on...”
Eric slammed the breaks, making a massive U-turn and heading west. They drove quickly, heading for the hotel.
“Eric, what the hell are you doing?” Darien asked, confused at the sudden change in pace. He was used to going fast, but not into ongoing traffic.
“They’ve got her, They’ve got Candace.”
“Who’s got Candace?”
“The Lupen clan. They’re another clan of werewolves, and they want me dead. I don’t know how they found out, but they know Candace and I were together and are using her as bait.”
“Stop the car.”
“Darien, this is no time to-“
“Stop the damn car!”
Eric pulled over as soon as he could and looked over at him.
“Darien, we need to go get Candace.”
“No, listen, did anyone ever tell you the consequences of breaking the treaty?”
“No, why?” Eric was confused.
“The price is death. If I kill a werewolf, someone in my family will have to be killed as compensation. I love Candace, but I cannot risk my family’s safety.”
“I understand. I’ll tell her that you weren’t around when I went looking for you.”
“Why would you cover for me?” Dariend was now the one confused.
“Because, I don’t tink I’d risk my family’s life either, and that makes you a pretty decent guy.”
“Thanks”
“No problem, now get out of here.”
He didn’t have to ask twice. Darien was out the door once the sentence was out of his mouth. ‘Maybe he’s not that bad a guy either’ Darien thought as he took off for home.
Eric arrived at the Howling Moon Hotel within an hour of the call. The place reeked of the Lupen clan’s unkempt filth.
“Glad you could join us.” A shrill female voice came from the building. Up on the roof was Mimi, along with her two friends, and, bound and gagged, was Candace.
“Let her go!” Eric growled from the parking lot.
“Come and get her.”
One of the male werewolves, the one named James, pulled the cloth from Candace’s mouth.
“Eric, no, don’t!” It was too late. The two male werewolves had launched themselves at him. They all fought in their human forms. Eric had the upper hand, fighting them off with all the self-defense he knew.
James and his ‘brother’ howled. There clothes shredded as they changed into giant wolves. Each one was about 4 feet tall from pads to spine, and 8 feet long from tail to snout. James’ fur had a sort of blood red tint to it, while the other male’s was black. The two of them circled, watching Eric with thirsty looks. Eric was not changing, at least not noticeably from Candace’s point of view. His teeth had become mor canine, and his nails were longer, sharper, like claws. He had become stronger and was ready to fight, even half transformed, which was good, because they weren’t giving him much time. The two wolves came at him, clawing and biting.
Inside the mess of fur, there were a series of yelps. After that the two wolves fell to the ground, reverting to their, now mutilated, human forms. Candace was so happy to see Eric alive that she didn’t notice how Mimi had gone missing.
And then it happened. Another werewolf, an orangey fire color had tackled Eric. They wrestled on the ground, Eric’s transformation fully coming to. He was now a 6 foot tall, human, wolf hybrid. His brown fur was semi-long as it fell over his toned body. Standing on his hind legs, Eric looked like a creature out of mythology, and he was there for Candace. The two wolves fought. Mimi circled around, biting Eric on the shoulder, but Eric fought back, swiping at her muzzle with his claws.
The battle lasted all of five minutes before Mimi went in for Eric’s neck. He caught her by the throat. Candace turned her face away and all she could hear was a yelp and a thump as the body hit the ground.
“Are you alright?” Eric’s voice came from beside her. Candace looked up and there he was, uninjured. That brought a smile to Candace face as he untied her. When her arms were free, Candace threw her arms around his neck.
“Eric I’m so sorry. I-“ Candace was cut off by a slight burst of pain in her side. Eric looked down, staring at the bloody shirt.
“Let’s get you cleaned up first.” Eric took her to a room and treated her wound. She wouldn’t need stitches, but she’d need to be careful for the next few days.

And as my cheeks ran with cold tears, I noticed that they were not all my own. Rain fell from the dark clouds overhead, hitting my face.
At that moment, I realized something:
"Even the heavens weep for the dead."
