Candace got up from her art desk at the bell and walked to the door. Alexa, who had been bubbly as ever, took the liberty of helping Candace with her books for this.
“Lex, you really don’t have to.” Candace said, walking through the hall.
“Oh, hush, silly, I don’t mind.” Alexa gave her a brilliant smile before two boys pushed by.
“C’mon, I wanna see this.”
“I know, they’re really going at it.”
“My money’s on Darien.”
Candace and Alexa shared a look and a thought. They rushed outside to make sure that Eric and Darien weren’t fighting in the parking lot. To their surprise, however, a crowd had gathered around nothing but a basketball game. They were both shirtless, dripping with sweat that would have glistened more id the sun were out.
“18 to 18” Darien said, dribbling the ball. “Sure you don’t wanna quit?”
“In-your-dreams” Eric smirked as Darien came forward with the ball. His steps were quick, but Eric’s hands were only a little bit faster. He took the ball and dribbled it out. When Darien came to meet him at the line, Eric took his shot from the three-point line. It sank, “21 to 18. That’s game, baby.” Eric and Darien met each other halfway and shook hands.
“Nice game,” Darien commented.
“You too.” All the kids that didn’t stare groaned as they handed over their money to whoever bet on Eric.
" Typical men. We think they're out here fighting and they're just tossing around some stupid ball.” Alexa rolled her eyes. “Though, it's a bit odd to see you two at ease with each other." Candace just giggled and blushed as she caught sight of Eric smiling at her. She directed her eyes elsewhere, feeling a bit childish.
" We've just been noticing how we have a few things in common. Right, Can?" Darien said, swinging an arm around her shoulders with a sly smirk.
" Eww, keep your sweat to yourself Darien." She said, lifting his arm away, despite how nice it felt. She was only playing with him though. He seemed to be acting more like a friend than an admirer, for some reason.
" Well, I guess a little peace and neutrality is nice. Hopefully it'll last a while and I won't have to kick anyone's a**." The vampiress looked from her brother, to her sworn enemy. " But, I guess time will tell about that, hmm?”
" C'mon Lex, I wanna get home and kick Bastion's a**." Darien then said, putting his shirt back on.
" For what this time?" She wondered, brow up in questioning.
" For taking me out hunting the other day when I should've been here." He looked to Candace with a frown.
" Darien, there was no way you would've have known beforehand. It's not your fault you weren't there. And, even if you were there, who knows what would've happened. Something may have gone wrong and you may have gotten hurt. Or, well, worse." Candace frowned.
" Aww, c'mon Can, don't get like that. Besides, Bastion is due for a whipping from me anyway." Darien smirked and Candace smiled. " I'll see you later for a rematch mutt." He said, eyeing Eric as he turned to leave.
" Whatever you say, leech." Eric said, smiling a little.
Alex hugged Candace and smiled at Eric. " Bye Candi! See you later!" She followed after her brother, each getting into their own cars before pulling out of the lot.
After their friends had left, Eric and Candace were the only two remaining in the lot, besides the usual stragglers waiting for a ride.
" Doing okay?" Eric asked, standing now with one hand on her shoulder.
" Mmm, yeah. I am." She smiled up at him. " Walking me home again today?"
" If you want me too."
" Yeah, I do." They smiled at each other for a few moments.
" Ready?" Eric pulled his own shirt back on and slung Candace's school bag over his shoulders.
" Yeah." She nodded with a smile, the two starting for her house now.
The walk home was too short. Candace had no idea what to say, Eric being no better. They didn’t hold hands, and the only time they would smile was when they’d coincidentally looked at each other at the same time. Eric walked Candace up to the door with a small frown on his face. Candace noticed and tried to think of a way to cheer him up.
“Hey, you wanna come in? My mom won’t be home for a while and I could use some help with my bandages.” She asked, looking up at him with a smile.
“Sure.” A smile spread across Eric’s face as well as he entered the house behind her.
“Alright ,well, let me put my books away and I’ll be right back.” Candace took her books from him and went to change into a pair of shorts and a tanktop.
Eric sat on the couch and waited for her to return.

And as my cheeks ran with cold tears, I noticed that they were not all my own. Rain fell from the dark clouds overhead, hitting my face.
At that moment, I realized something:
"Even the heavens weep for the dead."
