Grammar and Spelling: Chat Talk Vs Literate
There are... unfortunately a great deal of people who would argue that it is sort of a**l to get people on spelling and grammer, especially those prone to using * or - for actions or dialogue. Others will argue they are just role playing for fun, and while that is true, I firmly, and I mean firmly draw the line at not only chat talk, but the lack of captials used by people. Yes, I do admit role play is for fun, however it ruins my fun when I cannot read what you are writing!

That does not mean I am a grammar Nazi or a spelling Nazi, because quite frankly after all these years I still don't know how to disect a sentence, and there are words I cannot spell. There are though basics one must use, and to not use them suggests nothing but lazyiness on the role player's part. So, how can you make yourself a literate role player? Quite simple.

No chat talk:
"U r luv," might be quick and easy to use when you are chatting over msn, but you try doing a role play for an hour with someone who talks like that and see if your eyes don't burst. It hurts the eyes, for anyone who is use to reading a great deal and it is hard to make out and get through. Nevermind the fact that it limits in what you can say or do, for example... lol, laugh out loud maybe good for a chat, but for a character role play no... like my character could be giggly.... so "Tee hee", compared to the I'm too cool chuckle "Heh," or maybe the evil bad guy laugh, "Mawhahaha!", so lol has nothing on true laughs.

Captials Are Your Friends:
Perhaps the most annoying trend personally among those that think I'm being too a**l about grammar and spelling is the non use of captials. I am not being a**l.... we as people through the education system (unless you terribly failed second grade English), know that we are trained to read captial letters which tell us that either it is something important or we have started a new sentence, it makes the sentence neater and easier to read on our eyes. It hurts wtihout captials, and no I am not being a**l, since really how much more effort can you excerise in pressing the shift key?

Quotation marks:
Out of all the different grammacial points we use in every day English, the quotation mark has highly fallen out of favour among those in the net, personally I like them, now it is true some people use italtics instead to represent talk, that method I do not mind as much, but I do mind the use of stars or dashes to seperate action from speech, mainly because it is just action and nothing else which again limits what you can do. That and it just looks messy overall.

Spelling:
Ah spelling... how shall I name the ways you have annoyed me? I'm not a spelling Nazi, but I do expect people to at least try, again it is for reason of being able to read. It also has to do with being understandable, one would be surprised the amount of in character misunderstandings that go on because a person did not take the time to correct a spelling mistake.

Typos:
We all make typos, hell even as I'm writting this I'm sure I'll find a typo or two, however do try to keep typos under a minimum. If you're particularly prone to typo mishaps take a good once over. Sometimes when you go to fast you tend to trip over your fingers a bit, making for some pretty interesting typos. For the same reason why a person should watch their spelling, it's a good idea to be careful. Even the slightest change can make a sentence a whole new meaning, that a person might not have meant.

Enter Key:
Actually this one is rare, but I thought I'd mention it now. Some people don't use the enter key to create line spacing between speak or paragraphs. Now while it's... okay it is a grammar thing, there's another reason for this. It's a lot easier to read, especially if it's a complicated post if you separate the speech and paragraphs. For those of us who double... or even triple up on characters, using line spacing can make it easier to tell which character is which.
