Chapter V- Nightmare in the Moonlight
Beast Boy sat in the lonely hallway to the Medical Room. Only five more minutes had passed, and he began to tear up again. His tears stained the wooden floor as he leaned his head against the ivory wallpaper he sat in front of, he had his arms around his knees. He had been sitting here for a good hour or two, the whole time he cried. The clock struck midnight through the open window to his right, the echoing bong of the bells reaching to the bay water below Titans Tower. He turned his head to the flickering lights of the city, one by one they receded. Everyone was going to sleep. He himself was fatigued; now and then he would close his eyes . . . only to open them again when he thought about what was going on. The gruesome images raced through his mind for what seemed to be the hundredth time. The horrified look on Robin’s face as the team ran forward after Rage left, the tears he saw in Kai’s eyes for the first time in a year, the nauseated feeling he had in the bottom of his stomach, and the blood . . . he had never seen so much blood in his life. Just thinking it over once more made him shake and shudder. He didn’t want to ever see anything that bad ever again, not in his lifetime. He sighed and closed his eyes . . . he knew he needed to relax. “Dude, this isn’t working . . . maybe I should go somewhere else,” he thought. He got up, arched his back, and started to walk back to his room. He reached the door to the living room, but when his hand touched the doorknob, another door opened behind him. He spun around towards the hallway again, to see Kai’s head poke out of the doorway to the Medical Room. She looked surprised to see Beast Boy standing there, but she flashed a happy grin to him. Beast Boy strode up to her, his footsteps light and quick, not making any sound against the wooden floorboards.
“Hey, why are you still up? I thought you went to your room like, an hour ago.” Kai whispered, Beast Boy just shrugged his shoulders, and answered
“Nah, I’m not tired.” Kai poked him in the chest and called him a horrible liar. He smiled and chuckled “You know me too well, are you sure you’re not a stalker in disguise?” Kai gave him a playful punch in the arm. Beast Boy decided to just let his question out, not bothering to beat around the bush at all.
“What were you doing anyway? You shouldn’t be up either,” he protested, Kai’s playful smile disappeared from her face at the moment he stated his question. She murmured with a quick tightening of her fist,
“Hoping nothing goes wrong . . . just go in.” Beast Boy obeyed, and with a quick flick of his wrist he turned the knob to the Medical Room.
The first thing he saw was the moonlight shining through the window, and for some reason it looked brighter than it had ever been before. He glanced to the heart monitor screen on the wall. He knew that the bigger strap was obviously connected to Raven’s chest, the smaller one attached to her upper neck. They were each checking her pulse. He watched the graph on the faintly lit screen . . . it wasn’t responding normally. It would usually, as he found out, show a somewhat jagged line for normal beats, and more arched ones for adrenaline beats, when your heart beat faster.
“Hey Kai, I think this thing’s busted, it’s mostly a straight line. I’ve only seen a couple small beats, nothing else . . .” Beast Boy announced. Kai’s head tilted down a bit, her hands in her pant-pockets.
She mumbled softly, but just enough so Beast Boy could hear her, “That’s just it Beast Boy . . . . . I don’t know how to tell you this any other way, but we think she’s . . . dying.”
