Chapter VII – Sneak Attack
Rage checked the clock that was conveniently placed across from him in the darkened room. After a moment of adjusting his body, he read it to be exactly 12:27 AM. He already knew that everyone would be asleep by now. “Damn, this’ll be child’s play, I was really hoping for something more exciting . . .” he sighed. His voice was muffled by the black linen cloth he had tied around his mouth. He wouldn’t want to give himself away that easily. After a second to double-check his surroundings, he stepped quickly out of the darker shadows in the room. Snaking his way around the medical devices that were left untouched, he silently shifted his way towards the bed where Raven lay. Of course, he dodged the brighter light that beamed from the heart-rate monitor. That was another thing not to get in front of, that was for sure. He fumbled in his back pocket for a moment, trying to make the least amount of noise possible. About half a minute later, his hand emerged with a small, short-bladed knife. It was about the width of his wrist to his middle finger in size, but the blade’s handle was longer than the knife itself. The most distinctive feature wasn’t only this, it was the marking etched into the base where the knife met the handle. It glowed a faint burgundy-red color, the chiseled mark was shaped into an “S”, there was a couple marks scratched down the handle below it. Of course, everyone knew this was his weapon of choice. For some reason, he had always thought that the best way to die was quickly, so he decided to go with knives . . . they always worked the best. He turned his head slightly towards Raven again, she looked like she wouldn’t wake up . . . at least not until it was too late. He smiled at the gruesome thought, that these next few days would be the last time he would have to deal with her and her friends. In his contained excitement to finally end it, he removed the cloth around his mouth, and whispered “I only wish this could have been more challenging.” He leaned his head over hers, his crimson eyes shining, and just as he put the cool blade to her skin . . . the lock of the main door turned. His muscles twitched at the sudden noise, and then the adrenaline started to set in. He didn’t have much time now . . . this is what he wanted all along. “Akuma Kaji (Demon’s Fire),” he whispered, and with a quick turn of his hand, he slit the sleeping girl’s wrist. He cut it just a bit, not so it would bleed a lot, but just enough for the spell to work. He slipped a grin through his cold, expressionless face, and with a snap of his fingers he disappeared into the dark night.
The door opened a small crack. The inside of the room was as dark as the hallway. “C’mon, and don’t trip over anything,” Kai warned Beast Boy, he nodded, but the second he took a step forward, he stumbled over a cord, landing flat on his face. His body hit the floor with a sudden thud, and Kai spun around towards him.
“I’m okay!” Beast Boy announced, rubbing his head where he hit it when he sat up.
“Idiot . . .” Kai mumbled as she helped him up from the floor. Beast Boy grinned foolishly; she simply rolled her eyes and sighed.
“So . . . it’s like, midnight, why am I here?” Beast Boy yawned, stretching his back, his hands out in front of him. Kai shrugged, her ice-blue eyes showed a bit of wonder and anticipation.
“I don’t know, I guess it’s because I think Raven’s going to be okay, kind of like a calling or something . . .” she hypothesized, her hands behind her head. Beast Boy joked with a muffled laugh,
“So, you’re saying you’re crazy?” Kai’s cheerful expression suddenly dropped. Her eyes cast down towards the floor, her mouth in a slight frown. Beast Boy thought she was about to cry, he could see her eyes water slightly.
“Dude, I’m just kidding . . .” he reassured her, he slowly walked over to where she stood. He put his arm around her shoulder, and pulled her towards him. She turned her body slightly so she stared at his chest, and sobbed
“I just . . . I just want everything to stop.” Tears stained Beast Boy’s olive-green nightshirt, he stood there in silence, his hand behind Kai’s head. He pulled her against his chest, stroking her wavy hair from time to time. He quietly whispered in her ear, coaxing her that everything would turn out okay.
Kai wrapped her arms around his waist, her face turned to the side, her eyes closed tightly. Her warm tears clung to the loose strands of light-blonde hair that hung in her face. She didn’t want to let go until this whole nightmare was over. She stood in silence, only stifling a gasp of air between sobs. She had never cried this much in her life, only after her parent’s deaths ----- that same scenario was taking place all over again. Someone she knew and loved was dying right in front of her; she didn’t want to remember this death too. She quickly noticed that Beast Boy hadn’t said a single word to her this whole time. He just stared into space; like he was hypnotized or something. Kai took a quick breath, and turned towards where he stared. At first she didn’t anything, but once she focused her eyes in the darkness, she saw the faint silhouette of a figure sitting up, right where Raven had lain before.
