Chapter X – Summoning to the City
Kai awoke with a start, the alarm blared through her head. “Ugh……not now,” she grumbled as she threw on a bluish-grey T-shirt and a pair of navy jeans. She barely had her shoes on as she stumbled into the main control room; she was still tying her right shoelace when she ran into Robin. “Hey, what’s going on . . .?” she mumbled, still drowsy from the lack of sleep the night before.
“The usual, some idiot is causing trouble.” Robin sighed slightly, and tilted his head as he walked away for Kai to follow him. He and she met up with the other Titans, Raven still missing from the group. She gave Beast Boy a low-five as she walked over to him.
Starfire looked around cautiously, and asked aloud “Where is Raven?” Cyborg muttered
“She’s not coming with us; she’ll get killed if anything else happens . . .” Suddenly, as the Titans were about to take off towards the city, a voice called out
“Aren’t you forgetting someone?” Beast Boy and Kai spun around to see Raven sitting at the bottom stair; she looked perfectly healthy with a bit of a shine in her eyes. Her elbow rested on her raised knee, the knuckles of her pale hand touched her cheek; she was smiling slightly. She had obviously been healing the entire time she slept. Her short-sleeved navy T-shirt and her faded jeans contrasted with the mischievous look in her eyes as she stared at Kai and the group. A spark of dark energy generated in her gloved-palm, a confident grin of her face. Beast Boy just laughed out of pure happiness, Kai smiled at her friend who had finally decided to show up. “C’mon, we’re going to be late,” Raven told them, and with a quick leap, she landed next to the two teens. The trio was back together; it was finally the way it should be again.
Beast Boy’s now cheetah-eyes scanned the area as he burst forward. He felt like he could fly he was so overjoyed; of course, he was in cheetah form so he couldn’t right now. Not really noticing his increased speed at the moment, he ran after the speck in the distance he knew was Robin and the other front-liners. Cyborg had actually thought up a rather good strategy to check the surroundings at all times. He constructed a kind of army-like scanning group. The first three, who would be at the head of the team, would scout ahead to search for any incoming peril. The three in the back would search around the front-liners, just in case if anything was missed. Beast Boy quickly slowed to a stop and resumed normal form before Raven and Kai caught up with him. “You see anything?” he asked them, Kai shook her head
“Nah, nothing out of the ordinary . . .” she sighed “we pretty much didn’t have to look.” Raven was silent but nodded her head in agreement.
“I guess we’d better catch up with the others,” Beast Boy guessed, his expression bored and disappointed. The two girls nodded, and the three started to pace towards Robin, Starfire, and Cyborg.
“Well, this is a rip-off . . . I could have kicked someone’s butt already,” Kai mumbled, she was just as disappointed as Beast Boy had been. Raven muttered
“Yeah,” her hands in her pockets, her head up to the dark, grey, cloudy sky. Beast Boy stared at her slightly. He had never before realized how beautiful she was. He caught himself in the act though, flushed a pale pink, and turned his head forward again.
“Hey, it’s raining!” Kai cried out, her lips parted into a bold smile. Beast Boy hadn’t noticed it, but it already started to sprinkle. Kai played with the water a bit, pulling the molecules together, creating a stream of condensation. She juggled it from one hand to the other. The three teenagers paced themselves as they walked along the wet sidewalk of the lonely city.
Beast Boy’s eyes caught on to the figures ahead of them through the dense fog that now surrounded the plaza.
“Found them!” he yelled out to the two girls lagging behind him.
“’Kay, coming . . .” Kai told him, Raven still kept a slow stride alongside her. Kai noticed she hadn’t spoken much today; she often wondered what was going on with her lately . . . she guessed it was just the whole fact that Rage was back. She and Raven quickened their stride for a while, eventually meeting up with the rest of the group.
“Find anything suspicious?” Cyborg asked them as they trotted up to the other teammates.
“No, nothing but a cool looking rock,” Kai said with a cheesy grin. Raven rolled her eyes; of course Kai would say something like that. Robin looked almost disappointed with the fact that nothing was in trouble.
“I guess we’d better head back then, it’s really starting to pour now,” he sighed. A clap of thunder was heard from overhead, the sky was literally covered in dark grey clouds.
“Like I said before . . . this was a rip-off.” Kai grumbled, she put her black sweatshirt on and she shoved her hands in the pockets. Her hair was wet now, which made her look horrible; not to mention that she couldn’t do anything else outside today. She shuffled over to the rest of the team, who had already started heading back to the Tower.
With the fog thick enough to be cut with a knife, it was fairly difficult to keep track of everything around the group. Beast Boy had actually hit his head on a stop-sign pole already. The rain subsided for the time being, merely turning into a light rain instead of the bucketfuls that poured on before. There was still lightning in the distance, and thunder following shortly after each lightshow. Kai still thought something was wrong with Raven; she hadn’t said a word ever since they met up with the others. She went over and talked with her.
“What’s up?” she jubilantly asked Raven, whose head was still staring up into the dark sky. Raven simply replied that nothing was wrong with her. Kai shrugged with defeat, she wouldn’t be able to coax Raven into anything; especially at a time like this. She started to watch the lightning around them in the dark sky. It was so beautiful once you actually looked at it. The streaks of light were a yellowish color, with a hint of blue near the top. She knew it was plasma that caused the color. It was some kind of energy she learned about in science class a few years back . . . she had never imagined how mesmerizing it could be if you actually stopped and stared.
