CHAPTER XII – Death Note
(Later that morning, around eight o’clock AM)
“Hurry up! You’ve been in there like, thirty minutes already!” Kai groaned with her hair still wrapped in a towel from drying it out. She was already dressed, but she hadn’t gotten a chance to dry her hair yet from the ongoing rainstorm that the Titans had been trapped in.
“Fifteen minutes, and if you had any common sense you’d see that the door was unlocked!” a voice called from behind the bathroom door. Kai was surprised to not have noticed it before. She turned the knob and stepped in the doorway of the bathroom. Raven stood in the mirror, and noticed her presence.
“What’s up?” Raven asked her as she finished brushing her hair, the rain hadn’t ruined it enough so she couldn’t comb it. She was wearing a dark-grey T-shirt and a pair of black jeans.
“My hair’s not dry yet . . . you take way too long,” Kai sighed as she removed the turban of towel from her head; her wet, blonde hair fell to her shoulders. Raven moved over so she could dry it with the hairdryer.
“So . . .?” Kai giggled as she turned the heat to low on the hairdryer.
“So what . . .?” Raven mumbled as she pulled her hair back in a half-ponytail, Kai just smiled sheepishly. After a few seconds of thought Raven knew what she meant.
“You pervert, he came to find me in the rain . . . not for anything like that!” Raven fumed, her face tinted a slight maroon color. She had to pull her hand back to resist slapping Kai in the face.
“Ha-ha, just kidding!” Kai teased, her lips parted into a huge grin as she put the hairdryer away.
“You’d better be!” Raven grumbled before she and Kai walked downstairs where everyone else waited.
To their surprise, the Titans stared awkwardly at them, like something was completely wrong.
“What?” Raven asked aloud. She knew that it had nothing to do with Kai, considering the fact that Beast Boy stared at her, only her.
Robin murmured quietly, “Raven ----- come with me.” Raven looked at the other Titans, shrugged, and followed him outside to the patio of the second floor. It wasn’t hazy anymore. The sun shined through the cloudy sky, the storm was finally passing Jump City. The breeze was somewhat warm today as well. Robin stood against the guardrail like he was guarding a gate; Raven saw that he looked almost protective.
“What do you want?” she sighed. Robin held a thin piece of script paper in his hand, and he muttered
“I can’t read it; we thought it might be for you . . .” he handed the piece of paper to her as he said this.
“What is it?” Raven asked him, Robin shrugged.
“We don’t know, it came early this morning . . .” he told her, Raven opened it carefully.
It was a letter, from Rage of course, in Azarathean script. Her eyes scanned it over slowly, and she spoke aloud what it said:
If you’re reading this right now, it’s already in effect . . . soon it will eclipse your being completely.
I know you’re still living Raven, and I know that you’re still trying to find me. About five hours ago I caught sight of you at the edge of the bay . . . you were perfectly vulnerable, and yet I didn’t kill you. Do you know why? I won’t tell you. You’ll just have to find out the hard way . . . like everyone else in your team. Of course, they won’t live to tell the tale . . . . . not when it’s completely in control of you. It’s too bad we couldn’t have settled this the “fun” way . . . but then again, this is even better. I won’t bother with the details . . . so I’ll conclude this message simply with: Your life is in my hands.
Raven’s hands trembled slightly as she read the last sentence again in her head. What was he talking about? Why didn’t she know what was going on? There were too many questions, and not even one answer.
“What is he talking about?” Robin asked her wanting an answer, she stammered
“I ----- I don’t know . . .” her eyes were wide with fright. Robin sighed heavily,
“Great . . . more clues,” and he walked back inside, Raven following him afterwards. Right as Raven walked through the door, the alarm blasted through the Tower. Starfire and Robin were already heading out, followed by Cyborg, Kai and Beast Boy.
“C’mon Raven, there’s trouble!” Kai announced loudly, her eyes fixed on her friend. Raven ran over to her, and they rushed out the door behind the others.
“You can’t stop me this time Titans, you know that!” Dr. Light boomed, an orb of lightning in his hands. The battle had raged on for about an hour now . . . neither side was giving in.
“Beast Boy, go!” Robin shouted. Beast Boy lunged forward and in mid-jump transformed into a wolf. In a single bound he jumped at Dr. Light, a deep snarl in the back of his throat and his claws extended outwards. Instantly a beam of electricity blasted his furry pelt, he yelped and was flung against the concrete building behind him. He resumed human form before he hit it, and his head collided with the solid wall. He felt blood wet the back of his head; He shook his head slightly, and changed into a tiger to run back to the battlefield. He scanned the area for Dr. Light, and saw him facing against Robin and Starfire. Starfire had blasted him with a fury of star-bolts, sending the asphalt around them into the air, dust clouding Beast Boy’s vision. Before he could even blink again, Robin was thrown outwards; luckily Starfire grabbed onto his hand and pulled him to safety.
“You kids are too easy to fool,” Dr. Light sighed, and he sent a series of bolts towards Robin, he lunged out of the way just in time. Kai crept up to Dr. Light’s backside and yelled out
“Look who’s talking!” and she threw a hand out towards him, surrounding his body with thin ice. “Get him guys!” she yelled over to Cyborg and Beast Boy. Cyborg shot a beam out of his cyber-cannon, causing the ice-cage to shatter and sending Dr. Light into the air. Beast Boy was already waiting in the air as an eagle and transformed into a kangaroo, pounding his tail onto his head. Dr. Light’s body crashed to the ground, he was almost done for.
“It’s time for the grand finale!” Kai shouted with a grin, and Raven came forward, her hand shrouded in a dark mist. Dr. Light’s eyes grew wide, he hated this girl with a fiery passion . . . she always seemed to be the one to finish him off. As Raven’s hand sparked with dark energy, her mind set on defeating the enemy . . . a pulse of exploding pain erupted through her body! She suddenly crumpled to the ground, her knees on the asphalt, with her hands on the back of her neck. Dr. Light saw the chance to escape, it wasn’t like anyone was paying attention to him anymore . . . and he ran for it. Raven was completely occupied with the fact that she was hurt.
