After watching yesterday's episode, I feel that I should make a post dedicated to the awesome comedy/drama series, This is Wonderland. If you don't know what it is, then you should watch the CBC more. If you don't have the CBC, then I forgive you.
What is it, you ask? Well, for starters, it a lawyer show. Not a 'Law and Order' kind, mind you. Gracious no (though I did like the shows that I saw). It's far from that. It's not like 'Matlock' either, as much as I love that wonderful old series. 'This is Wonderland' does something that those other two shows didn't do. It serves up the freaky-ness of reality in a both humorous and very scary sort of way.
The show takes place in Toronto, Canada in the lower criminal courts and through both clever humour and complex tales of human drama which unfold daily in the seething crucible of Canada's busiest courthouse.
(Quoted off the site, since I suck at summaries)
The one thing I mostly enjoyed other than the clever humour, is the extrememly realistic approach to it. For one thing, not all their clients are rich and beautiful. Alchoholics look like alchoholics... bums actually have no money... people that are addicted to crack have the terribly aweful looking teeth. Some of their clients are really nice, others are complete and total assholes and others aren't all that sane. We have feminists, Native Americans, immigrants, gays, lesbians, prostitutes, transvestites... you name it, they got it. Just like in the real world.
Of course, it's not like most of the Lawyers are any more normal than there clients. I suppose I should talk about them.
There is Alice De Ray, the main character of the show, and probably the sanest out of the gang. In the first season, she's just starting out as a lawyer and had no idea what she was getting herself into. She tires not to let to many things faze her (though that's not saying that it won't happen) and is very compassionate, courageous and quick-witted when it comes to her job.
We have Elliot Sacks, and sex obssessed laywer who has recently found out he probably suffers from ADD. His view of the law is slighty... different from what most lawyers may see it (especially when it comes to defending women).
James Ryder... once known to be the best laywer there, now is constantly medicated, for he still suffers from severe psychic meltdowns when he gets emotionly worked up. Of course, who wouldn't with the clients he's had.
Nancy Dao originally imigrated from Vietnam, is to put it rather blunty, and over-achiever who always speaks her mind and will do almost anything to win a case.
There are many other facinating characters as well, such as the Judge Fraser who suffers from a brain tumor, but is far from being dead. Ronnie Sacks (played by Jayne Eastwood), who even to this day, still sleeps around and, of course the Crown Atourney.

-And here's a summary of the first episode... Summary of Episode 1 Just so you can see what it's like.
A few quotes now from the show...
"There's only one kind of sense. The Sense that MAKES SENSE." -Nancy
"Can't I just be married to both my husbands?" -a client
"Okay, so let me get this straight... you're from Elm's Street* and you beat up the guy from Corner Brook* because he wouldn't let you go in. Yeah... that makes sense..." -Judge Fraser talking to two boys of Jewish and Palestinian desent.
"Oh yeah. He listens to me all the time. Except for when he doesn't. Except for when he does... well.. except for when he doesn't..." -a client
"Either your client is a total a*****e or a complete idiot. Either way, he's guilty" -Crown Kaye.
So, I still haven't covinced you to watch it? Or do you not want to watch it because you haven't seen the first episode? Well, that's okay! Because Season One is coming on DVD this May!
Come on... if you're tired of watching those other Lawyer shows, at least take a gander at this. **Gives puppy eyes** It's on Tuesdays at 9:00 pm Central.
