Role Playing 911: No One Role Plays With Me! (Commerce)
General basis I find the problem of not finding someone to role play with (except in moments of sheer picky-ness) not a problem, however the Commerce Forum where a lot of the real time role playing occurs tend to be a problem in and of itself. In a basic rule, something taken from a friend of mine who has run several inns/cafes (who unfortunately is kidnapped by life), a good café/bar/inn/whatever is one where the main ‘job’ of the thread host and employees is to start a conversation besides serving you. Granted it would help if anyone else in the said location tries to be friendly with you. There are moments though that the problem is not in the patrons or the host, but in the character. Let’s cover now some tips to make commerce a bit more friendly shall we?

Corners:
The top five most common lines ever stated when entering any place is Commerce is ‘comes in and sits down in a corner’. Corners are a popular place for locals to go to, whether or not there is a corner to sit in. However, as cool as it maybe to have your mysterious or possibly dangerous character to sit in a corner it is not practical. To tell everyone you are sitting in a corner is to give the impression that you are sitting away from the crowd, and while that might be true, unless you strike up a wonderful conversation to the person serving you drinks, don’t expect company to come so quickly. If someone does say hello, grab it don’t just sit there.

Have I Mentioned One liners? :
I know I already made a speel about one liners if you haven’t read the entry yet go do so now for tips. Like I said, I run on the idea that the host is there to make conversation, if she/he is not busy it would be a good time to try and strike up a conversation. One liners where you do nothing but accept the drink will not get you anywhere, granted it is also hard for the server to strike up conversation. Be a bit descriptive, have a bit of fun with your character, the more interesting your character is the more likely you’ll have a conversation, and your partner might like meeting you again in the future.

A Role Play Partner:
In an ideal world, it would be nice to meet new people in a role play setting, unfortunately this does not always happen, and also for those shy people out there you might find it a bit awkward entering a new establishment for the first time without knowing anyone. My suggestion for you is to bring a person with you to role play that way you aren’t alone when you meet people. Also if you and your partner tend to really play up your characters a lot, someone might be interested in talking to your character in the future.

Read The Front:
Beyond the fact it is polite to read the front and see the rules of the establishment before role playing in it, often the front will give you a clue to what the place is like. You’ll know who the hosts are (which is good so then you’ll know the chances of at least meeting your server), and it’ll also help in your comfort level. Some establishments do not allow fighting, so if you are not a fighter or it makes you nervous that is something to look into. There are also varying literate levels among the establishments, if you are still worried that you don’t meet Lit levels, then a semi-lit might do instead. In addition, even if it says it is Literate, check the front rules, because the strictness of Lit and Semi-Lit varies.

Don’t Play the Hurt/I Need Help Routine:
I figure I should mention this now, because this is actually a common way to jump into a Commerce role play is to walk in bloody and hurt, and in need of help. Don’t, first your hosts might not give your character that much sympathy and simply patch you up and leave you by yourself if they don’t throw you out first. The reason for this is that this is the top five most common ways to enter a bar/inn and it annoys the hosts after the fifth person coming in with a stab wound. Second of all it gives you a bad impression of being one of those center of attention sort of people, not the kind of impression you want to give to people you’ve never met before.

Have Fun With Your Character!
As stated earlier have fun with your character and everything else will follow. The fun thing about role play is the ability to be someone else outside of yourself. This isn’t just a person who is in a way suppose to be you walking into this inn or bar… this person might be a charming play boy, or wannabe hero, a lonely musician… or just a complete nut job. That is completely up to you. Seriously…
