Like the seemingly endless ticking of a clock
Even when all you want is for the tick to stop
Every tick of every second sounds in your ears
Its endless barrage does nothing to quiet your fears
You want the ticking to subside so that all will stop
Though it continues its anthem of tick and tock
Quiet is all you want, to be left alone in your mind
But the clock winds itself through monotony inside
You can’t shut it out you just have to try and cope
You can only walk through life a pawn, a dope
People wear watches and hang clocks in the halls
People unknowingly bow when the hour bell calls
You cannot escape the tick and the tock
It must be accepted that life is a clock
Yes a clock that ticks in a metronome way
To keep us in time for whole of the day
The whole of everyday throughout life on the dot
We spring according to numbers on the face of a clock
The hands point us in the direction of our lives
And we have to obey, that is how we survive
How I envy the animals whose lives have no guide
Except the sun and the moon that rotate in the sky
They don’t live by hour but by the day
They live off instincts and not hourly pay
But we the higher species all have a code
That we live with just the same old same old
You can deceive yourself by saying you don’t live like that
That you do when you want and at the drop of a hat
But you still get up in time when the clock has rung
To head off to work to get your partying funds
No the clock of life has you ensnared as well
You cannot escape this metronome hell
The tick and tock will always beckon
Even I will always answer I reckon
Always do as the clock dictates in my life
I will have to survive the monotony and strife
How I long to be one of those caught in the dance
To never think twice about giving the clock a glance
They see no harm that the second hand brings
Nothing wrong with it in control of all things
Eventually the ticking and tocking will cease
When the clock winds down and all is at peace
No I cannot escape the tick and the tock
I must accept that life is a clock
