Don't let the title fool you this is all about anime....
Alright this is a topic that weighs heavily on my mind. No one else gives it a second thought, illegal downloading and viewing of anime. Lots of people love anime but how many actually purchase it? For that matter when they do purchase it how many purchase official liscened copies distributed by actual distibuters? Not many that I know. In fact, I am the only one I know that does their damned hardest to support my passion for anime.
Money, money, money...
With those thoughts in your head lets move to the obvious reason this is how it is. Most anime fans are probably still in highschool and middle school and have little and probably no money to spare for anime. They must rely on presents and parents. Yes it is tough I have gone through that hard, I have only recently been able to start purchasing anime on my own and only every so often. Anime is an exspensive addiction. But you must be patient and try hard. I mean really how often have you asked for or saved for other things that are more exspensive than two InuYasha boxsets combined?
Excuses and more excuses
The common excuses I hear from people close to me are usually not that they can't afford it but more or less because since it is available for less or no cost they want it that way. Also there is the , one person downloading something isn't going to hurt anything. That answer is the worst of the two. Yes I price shop, you can get some anime cheaper at Wal-Mart than Hastings and cheaper at Hastings than at Borders, but I don't stoop so low as to pirating to get it cheaper. The second excuse couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact there is so much pirating going on of anime the anime industry is in a huge slump, recently in the last six months Geneon and Newtype have both gone under and have closed out. The rest of the industry is having to cut costs anyway that it can just to stay alive. Anime sales have dropped so the buying and dubbing of anime from overseas is also declining which will make it even harder in the future to get a properly dubbed version.
Think before you act
Now with that information in your head we'll continue to combine the two parts of this rant into one complete thought. If you can buy the proper anime, buy it. If you can't save for it untill you can. If you save to by the boxsets it is cheaper in the long run. Don't download or view just because you can. If you do run out and buy that episode as fast as you can to wash away the shame. Also if you can't wait for it to reach the USA learn some patience. It is a valuable life skill exercise it that way. Please think about it, it is possible that your actions on the web today can cause a collapse in the anime industry of the US. It will make dubbings crappier and possibly disappear causing future generatioins of anime viewers to suffer because of cheap skates and theives.
You jerk providers..you know who you are
And as for you jerks who post anime online and/or make copies and sell it on ebay. You are the worst of them all. You know what you are doing is wrong and illegal and you are catering to the new generation by making it so available that most younger people don't even see it as stealing.
