Dreams (exchange 31)
Jaelin stood motionless as Amara walked away without a word. She was obviously hurt by his comments. But what could he say that would make her stay awhile longer. A lonely urging in his heart screamed at him to bring her back, to apologize. It's deafening cries filled every fiber of his being as he tried to call out to her. All he could manage to get out was a strangled call of apology, barely audible by even him. Coward! Go to her! Beg her forgiveness! Humble yourself for your own sake if not for her's! He fell to his knees in exasperation by his own feelings.
"I am sorry," he said to the place where she had been seated. "Truly, I am." If he could not help Amara, the one person in the entire region who would acknowledge his presence, then he no longer had a reason to reside in the city any longer.
She was shocked when he didn't follow her. When he didn't shout at her to stop. When he did nothing... but at the same time it seemed to hollow out her insides. He acted and spoke like he cared, but he really didn't. She wasn't a cause worth fighting for, just like the King's reasons for war.
Feeling sick enough to fulfill the lie she'd told to come out to talk to him that morning, she headed home. On her way she stopped to buy what she needed from the vendors. She paid more than she normally would have, not being in the mood to haggle over a price.
