Take time to fish out the guppies.

"I could." Jaelin folded his arms in agitation. Why was she so resistant of being free? How could she possibly choose a life of slavery over that of a free woman? Confusion and anger swirled around inside of him. "But I couldn't fight for a cause that wasn't mine. The King wars for his own gratification and plunder. I will only fight for the things that are just and true. Freedom, for instance." He cast a sidelong glance at her.

He wanted to keep his mouth closed and keep the conversation civil, but his emotions ran away with him.

"Your analogies and comparisons mean nothing! Living as a mindless serf is no life at all!" He struck a rose bush and recoiled as thorns bit into his hand. But he minded the pain little more than he did his rage. "Why are you so afraid of being free? What is it about choosing for yourself that has you scrubbing floors and obeying orders for that fat ugly master of yours?!"

She opened her mouth to argue as soon as he mentioned fighting for his own causes, but he cut her off as he kept ranting. The more he shouted at her, the less she felt like saying anything. She seemed to retreat within herself, growing meek. Far too often had she been yelled at in her life. Never once had she spoken up for herself and it seemed this wasn't her time to start doing so.

Instead, she stood and walked away. Even that act of disobedience and defiance made her stomach drop to her feet, weighing heavy on them with guilt and panic. Surely he'd beat her for acting this way to him... it was what everyone else would do if they were treated so coldly by a slave.
