He nodded briefly before leading her out the front door. "I only do what I feel is right. If I didn't offer my human sense of integrity, I would have nothing left to give to others but my service with that sword you saw in the corner of the den. And I pray that that day does not come soon." He took care to notice her anxiety around him and thought it best not to press her too hard.
The village inn and tavern was nearby and Jaelin was on very good terms with the owner. She came out of the kitchens to give him a heart greeting and instantly turned to Amara after. The woman's talkative self springing into action
"It is always a pleasure to serve strangers and travelers here at The Goddess' Blessing. I am Faeil Gurtolm, the innkeeper. You are a friend of Jael's? We don't ever get to meet his acquaintences here in Gheard. In this especial case, I will let you borrow my best room upstairs and the full service of my staff and I is yours. Welcome to Gheard, uh... what is your name miss?"
Amara smiled politely as the woman greeted Jaelin, but seemed surprised when the woman turned to speak to her. It would take a lot more than the short time since the Baron's death until now for her to get used to being noticed and treated like a person. The more this happened, the more she realized that Jaelin had been right that day in the gardens. Her life with the Baron was hardly a life at all.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Faeil. I'm Amara. Jaelin and I knew each other in the city before he moved here." She smiled again, this time it looked less forced. "I appreciate your hospitality, but I can make due with one of your lesser rooms. And if there is anything I can help you with around the tavern, to help pay off the debt of the room, feel free to ask me."
