Dreams (exchange 37)
"Yes, so we have heard," he said. "Although by now there are dozens of variations of the true story. Some say his wife beheaded him and dragged his corpse about the city. Some say she poisoned his evening meal so no one could ever prove it was her hand that had done it.... But that is not my business. The baron was a fool to do what he had and in the end it was he who reaped the fruits of his sinister labor." He drained the rest of his glass and set it on the arm of his chair. Her thinness concerned him considerably. He wondered how long it had been since she had last eaten.
"As I said before, Amara, every person is entitled to freedom and liberty. Along with that comes the burden of choice. What you do with your freedom is for you, and you alone, to decide." But her physical state worried him more than anything at the moment. "Come with me. You are too underfed and I am no cook, so I will take you to one who is." He rose out of his chair and walked over to her. He didn't take a moment's thought before extending his hand to her. Being in her presence alone revived feelings of infatuation, but he feared she would not follow him casually otherwise. I must guard my thoughts and dreams this time. For both our sakes now.
"If it's all the same, I won't tell you how he actually passed away. But his lifestyle choices did come back to haunt him in the end..." She felt uncomfortable with the way he spoke of the Baron, freedom, even the way he looked at her. It was like she could feel her thinness, feel how unattractive it must look. Part of her direly wished to turn invisible.
She hesitated, but took his hand and stood up. For a moment her eyes met his and she seemed to freeze. They were the same eyes as the first dream he'd had, enchanting and mysterious. "Thank you," she said quietly. "You've always been much kinder to me than I deserve."
