Dreams (exchange 29)
"Going unnoticed would mean inaction. Inaction would mean not having a purpose in living." He stared firmly into her eyes. "No one can live truly happily without knowing their purpose. Living here in the dense city has taught me that.... I am sorry you feel satisfied with not knowing yours."
Her answer to his previous question left him feeling a tad upset. "Why do you, miss, say your life as a slave is well enough for you when you have not yet felt what it is like to be free?"
"My purpose is to serve others. It's defined by my very status in life. I don't need to be noticed to know what that purpose is. If a man lives alone on a mountain top all his life, never speaking to anyone or being noticed, does he live without purpose or is his purpose simply a private matter that he defined for himself?"
"Sometimes part of being content with what you have is not looking to see what you are missing out on. If you were to dine for a week as the Baron does, you would miss it the week after and possibly become resentful that you did not eat that well every week. Why should I ruin myself by thinking about what my life could be like if I wasn't a slave?"
She sighed, frustrated. The only people she was used to arguing with were vendors over the price of their wares and sometimes the people who worked for the Baron.
"Why do you dream about being a warrior and live your life as an errand boy? You could easily enlist under the King's Army... couldn't you?"
