Jaelin laughed. "Lose him as a customer? That doesn't matter to me. Although, it would mean I lost my job at Taarven's." Why haven't I left the old codger yet? "But listen to me carefully when I say that what you are doesn't matter to me. I only care about who you are. Which leads me to my next question: I know you cannot leave your master for legal reasons, but have you ever considered escaping to your mother's home?"
"What I am is part of who I am," she told him with a sigh.
"Of course I've thought about going to the islands... but the Baron doesn't like warm weather and he doesn't do business there. He doesn't even participate in the slave trade anymore. He hardly tells anyone I'm a slave and not a maid... not since the Baroness. And if I went without the Baron... it'd be no different than if I ran away to the next city over from here."
Her gaze was pensive as she looked at him, studying his features. "Why do you work as a delivery boy?" She was careful to use the word boy because most people in his profession were just that: boys. Strong, hearty youths who could run about delivering things and running messages for hours without getting overly tired.
