The Other Side of Me
A Look Into My Random Thoughts
On Being A Lady
Women of today are so differnt from the ones even in my mother's time. But especially since my grandmother's time. Don't get me wrong. I am all for the fair treatment of women and there are fields where women couldn't work at one time where we can now. We still sometimes get the shaft when it comes to getting fair pay though.
I am not a feminist. Not totally anyway. I do believe men and women were created differently. But I know for a fact that even if a woman lives on her own she still needs men to do things. Men living on their own still depend on women to do things. Some people don't see it this way.
My cousin who is a single heterosexual male in his 40's by choice is a good example. Its a woman who usually brings him his food in resteraunts. Its women who make a lot of his clothing etc. Its often women who answer the phones when he calls somewhere if they don't have one of those stupid computer set ups that drive me nuts.
Now if it were me on my own, I would have to say that I am still depending on the men of this world to do a lot of heavy lifting for me. They put in the carpet of my house, they built my house, they come running during the storms to fix my electricity problems when a branch takes out the transformer and its men that usually help me with my computer problems.
But this isn't what this journal entry is about. No matter what kind of job we have as women, being a stay at home mom, being a CEO of a company, working as a construction worker, being a soldier, or being a store clerk, we should find the time to be a real lady. I know its not easy to look our best in certain circomstances, but we should try to maintain some dignity and look our best whenever and where ever we can.
I don't understand why some women get so huffy when men open doors for them. Its just a common courtisy. Sometimes we open doors for guys who have their hands full or who seem to be in a hurry. Its just the polite thing to do.
Mostly what being a real lady is about isn't what you see in the old movies. Being a lady is about being kind and conciderate and using proper manners. Manners people used to teach their children in the home. Yes learning how to sit properly is part of it. Being a proper lady does include learning how to be modest to an extent and then using that knowledge. Sitting spread legged in a doctors office is just plain tacky and gross.
Being plain spoken is a very good indication of a lady too. A woman who attempts to speak high above the heads of those she is talking to is usually not very well liked. And if she talks down to them she will be even less liked.
Call me old fashioned if you like but I see very few actual ladies out there. The younger the age group the less we see of the manners, modesty, and such. But there are still those who strive to be at their best. I know most people wouldn't think of a Goth being a lady. But I can tell you I have met them. Very well mannered, modestly dressed and plain spoken. I have seen punkrocker types with a mohawk the same way. Country girls too It doesn't matter what life style a woman chooses or what kind of job she chooses. She can still be a lady. It doesn't matter if she is in jeans and a t-shirt as long as she is neat and clean and acts like a lady. Its not so much what we wear but more of the way we behave.
