Don't count your chickens until they have hatched. This is a very old saying and it still holds true today. Chicken eggs are finicky little things. Sometimes they are never fertilized and so never become chickens. Sometimes they are two yokers and can produce more then one chick. Sometimes a snake will get into the coop and steal eggs. Sometimes they get tossed from the nest.

Now where it applies today. Besides the whole chicken egg thing it means to not believe you have something until its in your hand and the deal is done.

If you have a truck or car for sale and someone comes by and says they are going to come back later and get it... if they didn't give you money down on it at least... you may not see them again. Chances are you won't. So don't go spending what little money you have thinking you will have that money for the car or truck soon and it won't matter. You just might be hungry at the end of the week.

For example: We have a truck for sale. Probably 30 people have looked at it. Probably 10 said they would buy it. But we never saw them again. Including one who said he had most of the money with him and just needed to go to the bank and withdraw the rest of it. That was 6 hours ago. He still isn't back from the bank. But anyway, I have learned a long time ago that if you start making plans for what you are going to do with that money and stupidly start spending it just because of what someone says, you can really borrow yourself a ton of trouble.
Not only that but you can be in for a world of disappointment. Noone wants the trouble or disappointment. The truth is that when it comes to this kind of thing... trust no one. Because if you do you will have both the trouble and disappointment we don't want to have in the first place.
