Late in coming? Considering the game in question is 5 years old, yes, yes it is. With Brawl within the next year, I figured I should talk about SSBM, and will. I count down my 5 favorite characters. Keep in mind that them being my favorite is no indication of whether or not I have any skill with them.
5. Ganondorf: The large evil villain of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, Ganondorf is pretty freaking fun to use. He's large, and hits like a tank. Coming out of nowhere and uppercutting my friends up into the air is a favorite activity of mine, as is elbowing them in the face (digitally...and irl). Sure he's slow, but I still manage to beat my friends. I guess speed doesn't matter, guy who only seems to play as Fox!
4. Mewtwo: No, he's not a psychic version of Samus, yet there are some people who insist on playing him as such. That's not the point though, the point is Mewtwo seems the largest throwback to the original SSB, back when throwing was considered a viable strategy. I derive great pleasure in sending those fools skyrocketing using psychic abilities, or using the throws to set up juggles.
3. Pichu: Sure it hurts itself, but it's just a much faster, much lighter version of Pikachu. Yet people are so obsessed with how much this tiny electric mouse sucks. And then I beat them with Pichu, and they still obsess over how awful Pichu is and tell me I got lucky...6 times in a row. Also, they weren't using their best character, and the sun was in their eyes. Oh, and their Wavebird's batteries died, and they just received news that their family had died in a tragic cooking accident and they were broken up over the news. Feh.
2. Peach: I only like Peach because I can float above everybody, and then kick them if they jump up. It's fun to float (ah, good old Super Mario Bros II), and it's fun to kick people. She just has everything I want.
1. Jigglypuff: She is a pink puffball of pure concentrated fun. Her quickness makes for some fun combat. Also, if an opponents damage is above 80%, Rollout will most likely kill them. I love Rollout. If I could marry a videogame move, I would marry Rollout. Unfortunately, my friends have have grown wise to my Rollout-ing and always seek the best possible defenses. Ah, they're jerks.
And now that that's done, a lament for characters who won't be making the transition of SSBM to Brawl. Ice Climbers, Young Link, and Mr. Game & Watch have been cut. Now, it will be impossible for me to shoot ice at people, as well as fling sausages. I have fun memories of using 2/3 of those characters, and they will be missed as much as one can miss a fighting game character. Incidentally, I won't miss them that much. I just don't get attached to characters that much. I get attached to their moves. If Ganondorf had rollout, he'd be number one.

Rollout's a good move in Pokemon itself, if somewhat inaccurate. I've never played Melee, though. <_<
