The Reminiscience of the Wanderer
Uh hi.
Theories With Walter Sullivan
I'm a big lover of Silent Hill but not as crazy as most, however I do find it the most compelling (or the most lost in translation) video game produced and developed and whatever (Konami is God). So lots of people come up with their own theories of the game, whethere they'd like to or not, because well, when people see things that don't make sense they try to make sense of them. Its like how I always used to give reasons to fighting the badguys, personalities and voices even, in old school megaman games (sting chameleon, Chill pengiun, awesome guys). So here's my breakthrough Silent Hill theorizing. For your pleasure.

Walter your theories are sound and everything but you're leaving out Silent Hill 2. Surely it isn't as strongly related as 1 and 3...but well, the "god" aspect is, though its not the main part of the story.

I heard an interesting theory somewhere, how Samael and Metatron are the shadow figures of Silent Hill, controlling everything from a distance and menacingly bringing those to town.

Samael is the evil side, trying to kill those tortured souls lured there with its false realities (like how it lured james with the letter). Someone comes to town with a secret, a desire, or a painful past, and it exploits them for sacrifice (surely it must be sacrifice, look what they did to Maria. Maybe it was only to piss James off, but in that way, it was also a sacrifice). James isn't God, but he can push its power to a strong level by dying at the hands of Mary's vengeful spirit. Or finishing her spirit off completely. Perhaps killing her, again, was not in her best intrest. Who knows though?

Metatron is the good side, giving James back up and creating the "fog" of silent hill. Whether its to keep the monsters at bay, or just to lower the framerate issues (nyuk nyuk nyuk), the light world is watched over by Metatron. But it is in the Dark World that this "angel" cannot enter, and Samael controls all, doubling the evil and showing the greater evil of those who cross to the zone of darkness, the land of "just too freakin evil". Such as the Prison, the Hospital, or the Hotel. All have a dark world because of the evil people who populated such areas. Sameal exploits the evil, and turns the world into "His" "Paradise". Obviously the problem with Dahlia and Claudia is that they fail to realize perception rules all, and that their ideas of "paradise" may be different than their "god's". It could actually, in the Silent Hill Reality, suck majorly.

As for the "good force that helps james" AKA the overwatch, Metatron, an example of his good faith is bringing the little girl (laura, I think?) to Silent Hill, and protecting her from ANY monsters. Metatron keeps them from appearing before her at all times (Laura wouldn't see the same ones as James anyways, because they are relative to the person who's seeing them, Eddie's were people he could kill, Maria's...well she saw the same things because she's James's shattered hope brought to life by Samael). Laura helps James and also gives him the enthusiasm and the belief in Mary that keeps him going and thus preventing him to fall prey to Maria's whims (even though she doesn't realize she's a puppet until later, Sameal couldn't let her realize she was being used, lest James get a clue and realize "There's something really screwed up about that hot chick that looks like my long dead wife..." wink .

In any case thats just how I see it fitting in. And maybe this "good and bad thing" could be 1 half God of Reed (good) and 1 Half God of Snake (Bad) and thusly, we have a two sided coin. Both worlds suck because everyone who's drawn in is a freakin mental case (except Harry, but his daughter was kinda screwy), but one (the Dark Other World) is worse than the other because its a land under total control by a God who can never succeed, because the human spirit is stronger than his ill will, at least in the Good and Good Plus endings...

Course I still am just at the Amusement Park, and scared out of my mind, (after the hospital of Silent Hill 3) so I might be wrong. And I haven't played Silent Hill 4. My theories stem mostly from the second installment, mostly because I prefer an "outsider's" point of view on the matter (James's and Maria's) because they don't know about the cult, so the cult must be having some down time. Its only true reason for drawing him there must be a sacrifice of some kind to build the powers of God, similar to the torturings of Alessa. Hell, this could be what made God powerful enough to resurface in SH3, and perhaps thats how the 3 games are connected.
