After finding the state that Archon was in, Matthew hoped to relive his encounters at Antaros only this time coming out the victor. It took nearly five years since his arrival before war broke out, but this time he was ready for it. One of the first to enlist, the now forty year old demon was eager to fight the opposing humans. The land was actually broken up into two countries: Archon was were the demons and their allies resided, the other country was Illuminous where the followers of Pelor a god of 'good' and the sun...he was the sworn enemy to all that was unholy in his sight. Obviously demons would be viewed as unholy so many small boarder skirmishes broke out over the years, as well as arguments between the two countries. Nothing was as grand as the war that was to take place in Matthew's presence, however.
A devote follower of Pelor, a paladin of his highest rank had just returned from adventuring. She had found the state of neutrality to the neighboring country disdainful and sought to wipe out the unholiness before it could blot out the light of Pelor. Yohfa Kenrai was her name, a battle hardened warrior just back from driving off undead forces in a mystical land. Quickly rising to leadership in the government of Illuminous she declared war on the neighboring demonic nation, charging her battalions of paladins and other such warriors into the border cities.
Matthew viewed the destruction these pseudomagical warriors wielded first hand, barely managing to escape a brilliant trap that one of her subordinates laid out. Kujirro Atsukaze, a foreign warrior that opted to help the battle here as his country had just driven out demonic intruders..some of which had taken refuge in the area. The man was a fearsome warrior in his own right, and with in army to control he was a brilliant strategist. Matthew tried to avoid battle with him whenever possible but upon reaching higher ranks in the military he was left with no choice. Again holding the rank of Lieutenant, he was forced to fight this epitome of a warrior in a battle that would later earn him fame in the hellish army.
