Matthew was born within the realm of Antaros. Like many other nations at that point in time, the population was divided among a few different races, the two main ones being humans and demons. As most things like this happen, the two would not see the other's side on anything, causing friction on all levels. Eventually the demons broke off, starting a rebellion against the humans. Matthew's father was one of the leaders of said rebellion: Raven, a demon Guardian.
The Guardians were the heads of each sect of religion in Antaros. Unlike most nations who had their own religious host or hosts, the Antarosians did not have a deity...they opted to worship the power of elements. Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, Earth, Water, Light, and Shadow were the forces that the denizens of the land chose to worship...Matthew's father was the Guardian of Shadow. The Guardians held immense power both in battle and in politics...they enraptured audiences at their mere presence. However, even the Guardians who usually worked together on many things were split by the war.
Raven led the war for many years and soon his son followed him into battle, quickly rising in the ranks. There was no doubt among the other warriors that Matthew wasn't advancing due to his father's position. It was clear that the demon could handle himself in a fight. At the age of 23 he was made Lieutenant of the Resistance as they came to call themselves. However the army was crushed in a few short years, by not the power, but the immense numbers of the human army and their technological advances.
On the plains of Valderia the Resistance set out on their final charge. The humans had set up barricades and a fortress on the other side while the Resistance had just arrived. Just prior to the battle, the Antarosians had struck a deal with a foreign nation. Now, with a few small divisions holding these 'guns', they led the Resistance into their doom. Not knowing the power of the muskets, they charged at the bladeless opposition to be wiped out one after another in the crossfire of the human forces.
In a fit of rage and an attempt to show his power, Raven charged with the remainder of his forces. The Guardian too was shot down to the rejoicing of human forces. Seeing the unfolding of events Matthew called for a full retreat followed by a surrender when caught within the nearly abandoned city nearby. The terms of the surrender were clear, in order to survive all demons and any other race or persons affiliated with the Resistance must leave Antaros forever. With his father slain, his army in ruins, and his race cast out of the land of Antaros, Matthew set off to wander the lands.
