I simply am not brave enough,
To be the heroine of this dire fable,
I don’t think I can slay the dragon,
And I can’t afford to fail.
This sword is much too heavy to lift,
My own demons barely held at bay,
I cry out in vain for my own hero,
But it appears I am alone on this day.
A tiny voice from inside me,
Something akin to the sound of my soul,
Whispers that I am this fairytale’s last chance,
And that I must regain control.
Swallowing the lump rising in my throat,
The great beast gave a mighty roar,
Despite the terror I felt in that moment,
I remembered what I was fighting for.
The heavens above parted,
I lifted the weapon at my side,
And though in the end I destroyed the monster,
On that day this heroine died.
