Last night I went with a friend to his youth group and did the usuall. Broomball, card games, cow tounge tag, and garbageball. We started playing my new favorite game, Choose, with the players being myself, him, and three other people. Soon they had all left to play the cup game and then we got picked up by his dad. On the way home we still played Choose, but involved his dad in it too. Somehow we came to the topic of personalities and such, and he admitted that he hadn't really been himself until a few years ago.
Who could you be if you weren't yourself?
So I asked him, and he said he used to be one of those people who would rather become part of the background then in the open. One of those people who preffered a textbook to a group activity. I was shocked to say the least. I was quiet for a whole ten seconds. The rest of the ride home was a giant game of Choose, and the thought slipped out of my mind.
Who could you be if you weren't yourself? It came back to me while I was going to sleep, and then I couldn't sleep for a while. The question just ran around my head, no answer and no solution. There were half truths though, lots I guess. But the question just stuck in my head like a stick in the mud.
I guess you could be a shadow of yourself, only letting the peices that you think will be liked show through. That thought made me sad, because alot of people do that. I'll admit it, I'm guilty of doing that quite a few times, but it just made me feel like a shadow of myself, so I gave up all the false pretenses and stayed true to me and what I was.
People sometimes call me weird, and I am. People call me optomistic, and thats true too. People say I'm amused by simple things, I'm not going to deny it. Shiny things make me very happy. Give me a wrapper from a Caramilk bar and I'm set. But people can also say the opposite, but hey, their welcome to their opinions of me.
