Marie woke up with a start. One moment she had been laying beside Simon the next she was alone in his bed. She looked around and saw him standing beside the foreplace looking into the flames. She watched him turn and his gaze instantly captured hers. He said "So you are finally awake. I thought you would sleep forever." He sat down bedside her and said "How do you feel?" Marie said "A bit sore but I am fine otherwise." Simon said "I am glad to hear that. I didn't want to hurt you." Marie said "You could never, I wanted this and you went along with it. My father is going to be furious but I won't rat you out just to aoid punishment. You saved me from a life of living with that count." Smion pulled her closer to him and troked her hair, thinking about how much he was going to miss her after this night. They could never be together again and they both knew that, but why did the thought hurt so much. Simon kissed the top of her head and said "I should get you back to your townhouse. Get dressed and I will escot you."

Marie sat in her room, looking out the window and wondering how to tell her parents that she was no longer able to marry the count. Would they be mad or sad? She knew her mother would cry and her father would hurt her when she told him the news. She would have to bear it. Maybe she would run away with Simon and they could get married. If there was a child from their night she would treasure him or her. She would leave the house and get her own job as a governess or teacher. She sighed and went down to breakfast. Her parents would worry about her if she didn't. She didn't look forward to this but she knew it must be done.
