Story Chapter 2 : The Fountain
Near the middle of town stood the dilapidated mayor’s office. The windows were barred and the curtains closed. Half the windows were shattered and graffiti covered the walls. Gunfire sounded throughout the streets, as sirens were never heard at all. A cry for help sounded every so often before it was silenced. This was the city it had become.
The stranger stepped into the town and was hit with something miraculous, shade. He smiled for a second from the escape from the heat, before he had a look of the city. Corpses of cars littered the road and outlines covered the pavement. Old police lines fluttered in the wind and newly formed fires burned in a nearby barrel. The stranger’s face didn’t go pale, but it certainly wanted to.
His eyes washed over the entire scene, watching for any sign of danger, before he took the next step. He continued watching everything as he moved cautiously. He knew the group of thugs outside the city had no weapons, but in here he wasn’t sure. He heard a gunshot and ducked behind the mangled corpse of what used to be a Volkswagen, realizing the gunshot was in the distance he moved on. His hands dangled at his sides as his fingers twitched, as if wanting to grab something.
He quickly turned his head to look down each alley and the one on the opposite side. As he approached an intersection, the sound of engines drew closer. He hid in a doorframe as two black cars drove by, men leaning out the windows, guns held closely to their chests. It was going to be harder, but not too much harder. He stepped out of his hiding spot and was confronted with a man wielding a shotgun. The stranger quickly punched him in the face, pulled away the weapon and thrust his elbow into his stomach.
He sighed again as he continued on, after numerous more encounters he arrived at the fountain across from the mayor’s office. He was vulnerable, in the open, defenseless. He looked around as he stepped closer to the fountain, suddenly the sounds of engines revving high filled the streets and they were steadily approaching him. He turned to look right as the two cars began to pass him. Instantly he dove backwards into the fountain, landing on concrete. The bullets flew overhead quickly as the vehicles passed, when it stopped and the engines disappeared from hearing he stood up. As he looked at himself about to sigh, the engines started to come back, this time he was ready.
He reached into his coat, towards his armpits, the coat pushed back to reveal two semi automatic pistols with numerous clips strapped underneath them, these are what the chest straps held. He pulled out both pistols, and pointed them at the sound of the engines. As the cars pulled into view he fired, carefully and coolly, here a tire went out, there a cry of pain, the cars swerved, spun and stopped. He dashed forward to them, pointing one gun per car, most of the men had dropped their weapon when they got shot. He checked them quickly, seeing if they were wounded or bleeding, he smiled discovering none of them were dead.
He twirled the pistols and holstered them before leaving the vehicles. As he walked toward the mayor’s office police sirens sounded. He frowned and shook his head, thinking that the police force was either lazy or way understaffed, making excuses for their absence. He almost stepped into the street in front of the office before five police cruisers pulled up to him, the cops piled out, pulled out their guns, aimed them at the stranger and demanded he come quietly. He narrowed his eyes and did as he was told.
