Broken Covenant

Chapter 1 : City Limits

Crime was flourishing in a far off land, the police were paid off and the government was defeated. The center of it all was Electroton, the once glorious city now lay in waste. The citizens feared for their lives, murder and theft were now commonplace. All hope seemed lost, until one day, on the desert outskirts of this land, appeared a dark stranger.
He was young, not much older than twenty, but he had the look of someone twice his age. To protect his blue eyes he wore dark shades, which displayed signs of use. His clothes were dark, an oddity for such desolate and sun beaten landscape. The long coat on his back was torn at the bottom from wear, his pants were fading with age and his shoes looked well worn in. Across the front of his chest, two long straps were strung, the coat covering what they held. The brown hair on his head fluttered gracefully with the wind, in need of a good cut.
As he approached the city he had noticed three men following him. One was short with orange hair, the second not much taller than himself with mop of black on his head and the third was burly, almost like a lumberjack. When he stopped so did they and when he walked they followed. The city of Electroton stood 250 more feet when he stopped to ask. “Is there something I could help you with fella’s?” His voice was crisp and light, but not adolescent.
The burly man huffed. “Yah, seeing as you’re new around here, we would like the entrance fee for that city over yonder.” He nodded his head. “So if you would be so kind as to hand us anything of value, we would be willing to let you leave alive.” He grinned and his buddies followed suit.
“I’m sorry, but I have nothing of interest for you.” The stranger stood, arms at his sides, with a neutral face.
“but If you let me into the city I could surely earn enough money to pay you guys back.”
The burly man responded, “We don’t take kindly to smart mouths around here, understand. Give us everything you got or else.”
“Or else what?” The stranger replied, a grin escaping across his face.
“Or else we’re gonna smash your face in! That’s what!” The burly man started to turn red.
“Feel free to try.” The grin continued.
“You asked for it boy!“ He nodded to the other thugs and they charged at him bearing pipes and bats.
The stranger waited for the right moment and ducked down, with a leg sweep he knocked the short one down, following up with a drop kick to the thug’s stomach. He hopped back up and thrust his foot into the taller one’s stomach, finishing with a roundhouse kick to his head. He continued by punching the burly one in the stomach, no effect. The big man laughed at his attempt so the stranger tried the next step, he shoved his heel into the man’s knee, with a loud crack the man cried out in pain and toppled to the ground where the stranger punched him in the face out cold.
The stranger stood up with a sigh, he picked up his glasses and dusted himself off.
“Looks like this is gonna be tougher than I imagined.” He stated as he continued towards the city.
