Sunrays danced between the curtains onto the bed. Dark brown legs were tangled with cream colored sheets and two size 13’s hung off the edge of the king-size mattress. Davaid slept with one arm tossed across the bed and the other hugged a lush pillow that was tucked against his body. Last night had been busy at the bar. He’d pulled in a good tip last night and in a few days he could expect his pay check. Working the bar was good. It was always good the beginning of the weekend. But, he needed another job, which was why his alarm went off an hour earlier than usual. Normally his days would start much later; today was different. Tossing the sheets off himself he slid to the edge of the bed planting his feet on the ground before his morning stretch. Bones cracked and his muscles stretched across dense bone. Rubbing his hand down his chin Davaid got out of bed and headed to the bathroom. He pulled open the curtains letting the sun flood the room as he went. Sunlight was his friend.

Davaid enjoyed mornings. Each day was filled with possibilities and mornings began those opportunities. After relieving himself; he headed to the kitchen to make some breakfast. Davaid wasn’t a professional, but after about fifteen years of cooking he knew how to handle himself around the stove. This morning was going to be a quick omelet some fruit juice and maybe some toast. What would morning be without a big breakfast to go along with it? The kitchen was full of light. Davaid never closed the blinds in his kitchen. He loved walking into the open space to feel the light on his skin. Moving about the kitchen he got busy working on an omelet with the works. That included; spicy beef, tomatoes, green peppers, mushrooms and cheese. Three eggs usually filled him. Once he got that on the stove he popped two piece of toast in the toaster and went back to the omelet.

Twenty minutes later give or take; Davaid sat down with his plate on the island that separated the kitchen from the sitting room. After two forkfuls he noticed something was missing. Music. Davaid lived for music that’s why he took the job as dj when he wasn’t working the bar at one of the local nightclubs. Walking over to his sound system he played his usual morning mix. It was a bit corny but the first song that poured out of the speakers was Bobby Mcferrin Don’t Worry, Be Happy. There were just some songs that put you in a good mood in the morning and this was it for him. Once breakfast was done he washed the dishes and then headed to the shower and washed his skin. He had about an hour give or take to get to this new job. It wouldn’t be that bad. Davaid had been recruited as a driver for some rich couple. Normally he couldn’t be bothered to drive not when everything was so close to his apartment. Then again he didn’t get paid to drive himself. Grinning he slipped into the black jacket he’d borrowed from a buddy two days ago. He did a glance over in the mirror and with a quick smile slid out of the door.

Whistling he looked at the building he’d been dropped off at. This was an impressive joint. Tugging the sleeves of the coat he headed to the front door. Some guy opened the door and invited him to wait in the study for his new employers. Davaid couldn’t resist enjoying their taste. He wasn’t a man to splurge on these things but he knew good taste when he saw it. If he didn’t believe traveling was more important than staying in one place; his place would look the same he was sure. Davaid was sure these people weren’t much older than him. He’d soon be knocking on the door of mid thirties but his life was far different than what was before him. Just standing in this place made him think of what is life could have been. Married with kids back in the small town he grew up in. He had a mind for something else, so his grandpa always told him. The man had been right. Davaid had a mind for the world always had. So here he was twenty odd years later standing in some guy’s room offering to be his chauffer for a few months. Funny how life was. Some guys did the hiring and some guys had to be hired. That didn’t mean one had a better life than the other. People just lived different ways.

Hearing the door open Davaid turned to greet his new employers, “Sir….Ma’am it’s a pleasure to meet you and to work for you these upcoming months.

The woman’s eyes lingered over Davaid. He’d become use to that in his high school years. Davaid was a rather impressive figure standing 6’2. He kept his body in shape with late runs in the evening right before everyone got off work. It was the best time to run. Along with his height, figure and broad shoulders; Davaid was…well he was black. Women for some reason believed he held some sexual prowess their husbands didn’t. Davaid never acknowledged nor denied that claim. Nor would these women ever find out. He didn’t take to other people’s wives. There was a code of ethics he lived by and that breeched his moral code. Turning his attention to the man Davaid waited to see what he had to say. Would they give him a rundown of their daily schedule? Davaid wasn’t sure how this thing worked but he was sure this family had drivers before. They knew the ropes so he’d just follow their lead; for now.
