                                                  I've Purged Myself Of Her Blood;

                                                  but memories of her f-a-l-l in my heart

                                                  like S T O N E

                                                  It amused him that she believed in pleasantries, “ I’m not entitled to respond to such a beautifully concealed lie am I?” Nice to see him again. Adrien wondered how those words tasted in her mouth before she uttered them.

                                                  He’d forgotten how striking she was. Age seemed to refine Coraline. Her hair was as wild as he remembered. Adrien remembered tangling his fingers in the wild mass of locks. She’d let it grow since then. It suited her. Adrien motioned to one of the lush sofas. His upbringing demanded old world manners and a lady should never be left standing. Though, after she’d finished her little speech he wondered if the invitation would be accepted. It matter little to him. He took his own sweet time walking over to the seat adjacent to the one he’d offered to her. Once he was seated he set his left ankle on his right knee and smirked. Taking her ‘threat’ serious was going to take some adjusting in his mind. It would first entail a fear of humans, which of course was a near impossible idea. Both Adrien and Coraline knew that should a war ensue concerning humans and vampires. Well vampires would simply win every time. It was nature’s law. The hunted would not overthrow the hunter. Adrien did not deny the possibility the humans would be able to outsmart and even kill more than a few vampire; the numbers his race would rack up in human flesh however would far surpass any amount of vampire deaths.

                                                  Coraline spoke about being sure he saw some file. He didn’t correct her. Instead he let her continue on. Had this been another situation, another place and time he would have closed his eyes and let the softness of her voice lull him. Instead he sat with impeccable posture befitting his station. Each word she said was an accusation hurled at him with disgust and he could help the slight amusement over the entire situation. It had not been that long ago she’d allowed a vampire into her life, her body-- her heart. Now she looked on them with disgust as if vampires were truly the only evil that lived within the city. What of the humans that raped and maimed and killed. Were their crimes any less than the vampires that also roamed? Adrien wasn’t one to take an attack on his coven lightly. The air thickened with his concealed threat before he spoke to the woman intent on her rant and her blind threat.

                                                  You waste your time with your threat ma petite. We both know the vampire you seek is not one of mine. If the vampire had been one of mine I would have seen to the issue long ago. No this is one that does not belong to this coven. You’ve come to me to help you seek him because you know he does not stay here under the protection of my coven and the laws we are subjected to. Do not allow your commissioner to play games with your mind. You know better.” It was a sharp reprimand and it carried the weight of memories that should remain buried; but seemed only to spring to life with each second that passed. She refused to sit but he did not allow that to unsettle him. He as after all, the more powerful one of the two. If he desired she would never leave this room. It was a risk she took and after so many years he wondered if she believed she would be safe here with him. Her department was willing to risk her life on it seemed.

                                                  Adrien’s laugh was a harsh slap against the wall, “ if this city is sick of living in fear perhaps it has to do with the corruption among your politicians and your officers of the law. You humans are always so ready to place the blame of your misfortune upon another. We are not the evil ones here. Ours bloodlust is a part of our nature; something we cannot prevent. Yet you humans, have the will the right to choose and you slaughter without cause and thought. It is we that should fear you and the evolution of your mind.” He was letting her know without words that he did not care for her threats of jail or worse. Did they really believe sending someone into his coven with threats would be the thing to win him to their side? To help them?

                                                  I find it amazing that your commissioner has so eagerly forgotten the rules of the treaty. Unless, you can prove that the vampire is a member of this coven there has been no breech. We all know the rules of this city. This is New Orleans not New York ma petite. You will do good to remind your commissioner which city he currently resides over. He has just arrived but I was here when the laws were written and I would ner forget a word that was writ.” This time he stood and the door opened when he did, “ do not come to me with your threats again. If you wish my assistance then bring a bargaining chip; I no longer present a free table on which to barter.
