- No hello baby, no quick kiss or bright smile. Rafe brushed it off because well, she was busy and like she reminded him; she was more than busy with the ongoing event. Rafe was proud of Emma and would have told her that if he thought she would take him at face value. Right now, he figured she would think he would say anything to keep her in a good mood. It was a part of what it meant to be a boyfriend. You said the right thing, made them feel good and they would smile at you and tell you how much they cared for you and how wonderful you were. Too bad, Rafe didn’t buy into the commercialized aspect of relationships. He’d wait until he knew she would appreciate what he had to say, where it wouldn’t demand an automatic response like thank you…that’s sweet of you to say.
You know I always miss you. Some how the words didn’t exactly cut it. Rafe look down at Emma and tried to figure out what was up. Was hosting this event that stressful? He couldn’t really say. Rafe was the President and while he helped to supervise events he was never totally in charge of making sure everything was in place. He imagined Emma was a bit beat. Not, only did she have to do bookings, flyers, getting the art and doing promotions she also had to be here to make sure all the new recruits for the Kappas were there doing what they had to do. If the event flopped it was on her shoulders and he knew how big a responsibility that could be. It must be the strain that had her so tense. His fingers stroked her waist in an attempt to soothe her, but his touch seemed to do more harm than good.
Aloof. He couldn’t’ remember a time when Emma acted like that with him, or anyone else. There was something going on and it had nothing to do with the event. And, of course he had no idea what was going on because, well he hadn’t called or texted her all day. Could that be what had her upset? Rafe hoped not. They had this conversation before. He wasn’t going to be the type of guy to always be running after her. They were both important people in their social groups and every minute they wouldn’t be able to spend time with each other. It was why time spent together shouldn’t start off with grudges. That was what he strongly believed. But, perhaps he was being too logical. Well damn eh was a man and he worked on logic first. He just couldn’t tap into the emotional strain women lived on. And, his girl friend being an artist was slightly more emotional than any other woman he’d been known to deal with romantically. Rafe for the first time found himself at a loss. Watching Emma rush to the bathroom he stood there waiting for her to come back. What else was there for him to do?
“Okay baby…I’ll be,” she had already walked off, “ here.”
Rafe wondered if any of her other sisters knew what was going on. Then again to ask them and find out it was something he did would definitely ruin his night. It was best just to wait her out. She would come around eventually to tell him what was going on. If she didn’t then he would prod her about her attitude. This was her event. She shouldn’t be so tense. And, if he was the problem then hell he could always leave. He wasn’t going to stay there and ruin her night and his with no reason. Rafe tucked his hands in his pocket and turned to face the crowd. He felt a bit foolish facing an empty chair. The room was becoming crowded with each second that passed. There was a mic check going on and he guessed there was going to be some performances, which should be entertaining. Rafe was about to go around the room looking at the art when he happened to see an all too familiar face. It was none other than Ms. Adrianna Palmeiro.
Adrianna was the social planner for Theat Nu. Rafe couldn’t remember a time when the girl wasn’t around. She had presence, which wasn’t always a good thing. Not only did her presence, turn girls off..it was also intimidating for guys to approach her. But, seeing as he wasn’t interested in her, at least not in that matter he didn’t have any problem walking over to where she was sitting. The younger woman sat swinging her legs back and forth. It reminded him of a young child unsure of herself…not a move executed by Adrianna at all. The woman always seemed so sure of herself. Why the hell was she by herself at a Kappa gathering? Well Lauren was by herself, so that point wasn’t really valid. Rafe wondered then, why they weren’t together.
Because he walked away from watching the bathroom door, he didn’t see when Emma slid out of the bathroom. “ Ms. Palmeiro…what a surprise. When did you get in? Wanna take a look at the pieces around the room? Or are you forbidden to be seen with me?” He could only imagine what Lauren had told the girls about their break up. Some was exaggerated he was sure, but what he was sure of was that most of it hadn’t been. Well…these things happened. And, if he was in the Nu’s black book then so be it. Emma was worth it, even when she was putting him in punishment for something he knew nothing about. “ When did Theta Nu’s start coming to Kappa events?”
The Theta Nu’s were never ones to mingle. They were elite and they made sure everyone knew it. So, Rafe couldn’t help but wonder what angle they were going for? Were they trying to win the numbers they were slowly loosing to the Kappas? If they were he would have to say it was a damn brilliant idea. He had to give it to Lauren; she always came up with brilliant ideas. His eyes unconsciously travelled the room until they landed on Lauren once again. The blonde was talking with…Hay? What the hell did they have to talk about? Hay was talking with Lauren when he hadn’t spoken to his best friend in what…months? A year maybe? And, yet the moment he breaks up with Lauren, Hay suddenly decides to become friendly and talk with her? Rafe turned from the situation in disgust. He couldn’t believe Hay was being so childish. They had been friends for years! It was time to stop letting this s**t get in between them. He couldn’t help it that the frat he was in, happened to be better than the one Hay pledged with. What the hell did his friend want from him? Should he just lay down and let Hay win? He couldn’t do it. Wouldn’t.
