Dedicated Father & Fighter

The sneak had taken a bite out of him. He couldn’t imagine that. It was a low down dirty trick. He hadn’t seen anything like that since the fight with Tyson and Holyfield. Never having been apart of such an experience Marcus had not known how to respond. That was when the cheat got those two lucky blows and in the middle of the ring he did the most embarrassing thing. He tripped. It didn’t matter than in the end he won the game. The mere fact that he fell while in the ring, and over his own legs none the less would be enough for the fighters he did have a close friendship with to taunt and tease him about for the next what three months, the least. Marcus was sure they would have taunted him then if he hadn’t glanced at the clock and realized it was time for him to head home. Home…there was a mixture of songs in his head when he thought of home. Or was it sayings? Either way! Home, home on the range was an instant classic in his mind and the saying that went along was Home Sweet Home. The Marely heaven…or haven.

Marcus walked out of the boxing gym with his bag tossed over his shoulder and a quick gait to his steps. If he didn’t get there in time he knew his head would be on a platter. And, that was worse than the sting of the bite on his shoulder. By default….a headless man always won over a vampire. It was plain and simple logic. A person always felt better in the company of a vampire than a headless ghost. Jumping into his black four door Ford D-150, also known as Big Mama; he headed home. Marcus always tried to leave the gym when he believed the five o’clock traffic had died down. It was usually the cause of such confusion when he did finally get home. Why wasn’t he earlier? Where had he been couldn’t he have called? Women, he didn’t know they could nag so much nor did he know the nagging he be in his own children. But, you never knew what life was going to give you. Marcus had long ago learned to pull with the punches...throw the punches...roll with the punches! That was it.

He had no idea what was going on with him and odd sayings. They seemed to make a niche in his mind lately. It was odd the way that happened some days. Shaking his head, he turned up the cd he was listening to. Surprise, surprise it was an old Ella Fitzgerald cd. The man burned the woman on nearly every cd in the car. His daughters knew the lyrics shortly after they were one years old. He was completely old school so his eldest told him frequently. Marcus didn’t mind at all. Old school fit him just as soundly, as the boxing gloves he slipped on every time he entered the ring. The lyrics of Wait Till You See Him poured out in the large F-150 that had been cleaned just this week. Marcus was a bit of a freak when it came to keeping Big Mama clean! Nothing upset him more than when he just sent her in for a good cleaning and the rain came down. And, when it rained it always seemed to poor.

Marcus found himself taking as many shortcuts as possible to get home on time. Not only did have to pick up the girls he also had to take a bath. Tonight, he promise an old buddy to meet up with him. Apparently they were going out for a night on the town. His kids were going to sleepovers for the weekend. It had taken him nearly a month to give them the okay. Marcus made it a point to get to know the parents of the girls his daughters were so passionate about sleeping by. He took them all out to dinner and they talked got to know each other. It seemed Marcus was the only guy they knew that was so obsessed with his daughter’s safety. And, while they might have thought that to be an insult it wasn’t. In fact, he was proud that he was such a dedicated father two his two daughters.

Makena Emiliana and Melina Amara were the most important people in his life and he wasn’t going to take a chance with them nor their safety. He watched lifetime; he knew what happened at sleepovers, especially when the parents weren’t paying attention. Call him overprotective he didn’t care! His daughters were still under the age of thirteen. If he didn’t protect them then who would? He made a point of it to ensure they told him everything. The last thing he wanted to be was simply a stand in parent. They already had the short end of the stick. Their mother deciding she couldn’t deal with his career and two children so she up and left. Marcus was still not over calling her ten kinds of a b***h. Her parents were still in contact with the girls. And, they had been for a few weeks in the summer to visit them. But, that was all Marcus was prepared to allow. He wasn’t sure what her parents might say to them about their mother nor if their mother would suddenly show up wanting to be maternal. He’d seen a movie like that on lifetime as well. Currently, Marcus had sole custody of his daughters but that could very well change. If there was one thing he knew in this life it was that nothing was permanent. But, he would make life for his girls as stable as possible. He couldn’t promise permanent but stable he would give to them. The oldest had just turned five about four months ago and his baby; well she was three going on fifteen. Who knew babies were so damn smart? He had no idea about kids until Makena had been born. She had been a challenge on her own. Granted she wasn’t the first baby in his company but she was the first baby that he had been responsible for. When Makena had been born their mother had been thrilled in the beginning but shortly after she lost interest. A year after Melina was born, she left. Marcus often wondered if it was because of him insisting the girls carry M as their first name. It was often a joke he often told himself when he found himself wanting to hunt her down and tie her to the house with her children where he felt she should be. Marcus still had a hard time understanding how a mother could leave her children. Then again, this was the twenty first century, women left their children all the time! Marcus just never imagined he would have happed to him and his children.

Luckily, his daughters were not lacking in the arena of female figures in their lives. He had not only his mother but also sisters, and their neighbour who was currently watching the children as he sat in traffic wondering about them. Quinn was a gift from heaven. Not only was she a woman that didn’t mind the two girls from next door coming over every day, she also happened to be a chef. Marcus liked to believe he could do all things, but if there was one thing he could not do it was cook a solid meal. He heavily depended upon his neighbour and the large Tupperware he often left at her house so that she could send dinner home for him and his daughters. When Marcus shopped, he shopped not only for his house hold but for hers as well. He didn’t feel right having her cook for him without some form of payment. Not, only did he often buy food for her house, he also did small things around his her house. He was her neighbour and she was a part time mother to his daughters. She wouldn’t take kindly to being called a mother…a big sister. Yes, that would be the right word to use, though he did not think it possible to produce a child the same age as he was. But, that was minor detail!

Thirty to forty minutes later, Marcus was pulling into his driveway. Park car. Get girls. Eat Dinner. Drive girls to sleep over. Go out. Yup, that was his check list and if he stuck to it; it was possible he could get laid tonight. He of all people should be cautious about random relationships especially seeing as he already had two daughters. But, his daughter’s mother had been his last. And, for a man with desires such as his own…well it was about time. There was some frustration he needed to release. He was experiencing that sexual fever Marvin Gaye spoke about in his song. What he needed was that Sexual Healing, “ Sexual healing is good for me…..sexual healing baby…helps me loose my mind.” Locking the car his baritone voice dimmed to a light hum as the tall caramel figure walked across the street and down two houses to his neighbour.

As always, he knocked before going inside. This was one door that to him always seemed open, “ Kena? Mel? Quinn?

DADDY!
DADDIE!!!! ADDIE

There are my angels,” Marcus bent down lifting a daughter into each arm. Giving both of his daughters smacking kisses he smiled, “ are you two ladies ready to leave your father for a night on your own? Did you tell Quinn about your big sleep over?” Marcus continued to talk to his daughters about their sleep over, drilling his number into Kena’s head so that she could call if she needed him. He really regretted not getting her one of those limited cute cell phones that contained a list of emergency numbers. He hadn’t realized the sleepovers would start so soon. It made him want to get a wife simply so people would feel comfortable with having the sleepovers by his house, simply so his girls didn’t have to sleep out. It was twisted logic but it was not beyond Marcus. For his girls, he would do anything even marry a woman just so they could have a mother to love and care for them. Though, finding that said woman would be hard unless, he hooked up with one of the teachers at the girl’s school.

With his daughters in his arms, Marcus moved into the house and towards the kitchen. Quinn always seemed to be in the kitchen. He slipped his tennis off by the door and padded across the floor in a pair of white socks, that surprisingly went well with the ‘gym’ outfit, which consisted of a pair of black basketball sweats and a tight dark blue wife beater Earlier in the week Marcus cut the buzz that had been growing on his head. Now, it was shaved bald just the way he liked it. And, his facial hair had been trimmed. The girls complained about it when he had been tickling them the other day. What they didn’t like went out and what they did like stayed. They were the universe in his world.
