He heard her but Darius was no longer listening. Her words tossed him into a vat of emotions he was not ready for. Dreams of old flooded his mind about a young boy whom he cuddled, held, pushed on swings. The young boy was always there in his dreams, in his dreams. He watched the boy grow, knowing he belonged to him but there had never been a name in his dreams never been a name. But, now he knew who that young boy was who haunted him for the years in his sleep. It was his son, his son. There had been times when Darius cursed the dreams that haunted him, cursed the young boy that reminded him of what he had with Annuska. The boy dimmed away, disappeared from his dreams. He willed his son away.

Darius ached. His mind could not wrap itself around any form of sanity. Daddy. It was the childish voice he remembered from his dreams. Why can’t we be together?. The memory triggered a violent storm of emotions that had him tossing his head back against the seat he collapsed into. His emotions ragged. They swirled through the house turning his eyes into a murky silver blend. The house seemed to suck inward, every one was flooded with such intense grief it brushed their sanity like silken fingers. Grief smiled unleashed in such a powerful way. She swirled around Darius’s mind first, knowing if she wrapped herself around his mind, around his control she would win touching and controlling the minds around the house. And, he would have allowed her to control him if it were not for Ana invading his mind reaching out for him. She called to him with a voice filled with pain longing and need. He was not the only one that suffered. She reached for him to soothe him. And, she warded off the emotion that was more than willing to choke the sanity right out of him. It was Ana’s voice that removed the grip grief wound around the outer cortex of his mind.

The warmth of her body as she slid into his lap forced the cold hands of grief away. And, even though she railed, he heard the words Ana whispered to him. He heard the words of love she offered to him. She offered him sorry and life in the same day. His mind and emotions were tormented. Yet, he could do nothing more than respond to Ana, always to her. His hands wrapped around her waist and he pulled her tight against his chest. She was the woman that carried his son. Inside of her, their baby dwelled. His hands laid on her stomach and he closed his eyes as if willing himself to that moment when she first found out. He wanted to give life to that moment in his touch. But, he couldn’t. Darius’s held Ana in his arms with his eyes closed. His face he dropped into the midst of her golden hair and he held onto her. Held on until he could feel the grief subside.

The instant unexplainable and unpredictable grief that shook the house, eased away slowly until it disappeared. No one understood the reason for it. Some would blame it on deaths of loved one’s past or old hurts that had yet to heal. There were few that would realize that they had been under the control of Darius’s emotion. Who would stay with him if they knew just the extent of his powers? That they could be manipulated from one emotion to the next? There were very few that would stay and that was the reason they would never know, it was the reason they would look for explanations for the grief they felt in their own life. They would never look to him. They would never think of him as that strong. It was why he would always be able to manipulate them.

There was a knock on the door. The voice that came through was young. One of the orphans, Darius rescued. He didn’t know what it was about the young child that called out to him. But, he kept the boy around. Bought him to his house and gave him a home. Arik was not usually so formal. Who had gone about to teach him manners he wondered? The boy was still young, nine at best and he was filled with questions. Darius found that he never knocked always barging in. Jacques must have issued a warning to the boy and with good reason. Things could have very well heated in another direction between him and Ana.

Stroking her back, he took a deep breathe. He had to pull himself together. Tonight, would be enough time for him to think more on his son. Perhaps he would be able to see the boy in his dreams once again, now that he knew,,,,,,,now that he understood. “ I have dreamed of him…my ….our son.” It was all he would admit. He would not tell her how he cursed the boy from his dreams. Darius could not speak of the ache that sat in his chest. He could not imagine what she went through. Darius could hear the love in her voice as she spoke of their son. A boy that she carried knowing it was possible she risked her own life. Yet still, she carried their son in her womb. Darius brushed her hair away from her face, “ I wish I had been there for you Annuska…too….too tell you how much I loved you and how much I cherished the gift you were giving to me.”

They were words meant for the past. Words, that should have been given, should have been said. But, what good were they now to a heart that had been broken an then mended without vital parts of itself? He didn’t know. Would his words give her comfort? Would they cause her more grief? “ You should eat. Your body needs to rebuild it’s energy.” Darius still remembered the way she struggled to walk to him when she entered the room. She was light as a feather sitting in his lap, “ wrap your arms around my neck, I’ll carry you.” The tone in his voice said there was no room for arguments. She was still too weak in his mind and his resolve was set in stone. Just like her, he was very stubborn and set in his ways.

Lifting Ana in his arms as he stood he headed towards the door, “ the young boy that will be at the table. His name is Arik…he was an orphan that I bought to live here with me. He is a bit wild. We are still not sure what his talent is or if he has one. He is still a child.” Darius’s tone changed when he spoke of the boy. You could hear the affection he held for the young boy. He was…proud of the boy. Now there would be an ache whenever he looked at Arik. Darius would look at him and wonder about his own son and the questions he would ask, the life he would miss.

No matter what life gave to you, it always seemed to take. It was not the giving that was constant but the taking. And, he wondered just how long he would have to enjoy the gift he was given before something was taken from him once again. With Ana in his arms, he walked down the hallway to the dining room where dinner was set up. At the long table sat; Dr, Jacques, Kylin, who did not look happy with the couple that just entered, there was the young boy Arik and a table setting for Ana and himself. No one else would be joining them for dinner. There were few people that were able to guard their thoughts at the table and those were the people Darius ate with. All but Arik could control their thoughts, but Arik was a boy with questions and no malice or deceit he wished to hide. Darius often wondered how long the boy would sit at the table with him before he too faded away into the background.

He moved to the empty chair near the head of the table and opposite Arik, and set Ana down. Darius took his place at the head of the table. Picking up his fork, he nodded at the rest of the table and then removed the silver covering and set it aside. Each meal was cooked according to the particular taste of the person in front of the plate. Darius was a man that enjoyed lamb and so there were cuts of lamb in a thick gravy with a salad and a collage of vegetables with a small helping of potatoes. Ana, would not be allowed to have anything as heavy yet. But, what she did have before her would be more promising than the food she had been eating the weeks before.

Kylin said nothing. Instead she observed and ate her food in silence. Strangely enough, Arik said nothing. He was too busy eating and staring and Ana. The child wondered just who Ana was and why Darius was carrying her in to dinner. He also wanted to know why she was in their house and how long she was staying. But, the doc warned him not to ask too much questions. Arik figured he would just wait until later when he had Darius alone then he would ask him about the woman.
