I wake to the buzz of my alarm clock. My toes curl at the sudden shock of cold in the room. Why would I want to get up? As my eyes adjust to the lighting, the sound of rain tapping my window awakens a sigh in me.
This cold, shallow room hums a melody of death. Death to my enthusiasm. This is just another day in another month in another year that seems to be taking too long.
I force myself to move. Just a little movement and maybe she'll stop screaming at me to "get the ******** outta bed already." I stagger to the bathroom for my morning ritual.
I spit the minty toothpaste into the sink and stare into the mirror reflecting a beast of burden. My lip curls in disgust. I put a hand over the part of the mirror that shows my face. Not now.
I dress for the rain; baggy jeans that drag way too low on the ground, and a tank top with my usual hoodie. Black converse sneakers, too. The kind that rain just soaks right through. Who cares?
As I walk through the mud filled campus that is my high school, I can feel a sense of warmth inside my beating chest. Bronchitis? Possibly. The drizzling rain drops hit my face like little bombs. A splatter on my cheek, forehead, and eye. The damn rain always gets you in the eye. One way or another.
As expected, the rain has soaked through my shoes, and by now, my socks. The bottoms of my jeans are caked with mud and my tank top is now completely rained through.
Finally the 12:20 bell rings. My car engine starts and the angered beast now awakens. I await as my jeep begins to warm up and I can put the heat on. The trip won't be pretty. But the destination is bitter sweet.
The roads are drenched. The oil slicks begin to become visible among the splatters on the rain on the asphalt. Oh well. I guess I have to drive safe. I'm not in the mood for a road pizza today.
I arrived. Finally. A thirty minute journey of speeding, swerving, and racing other cars to be first in a merge has brought me back. I'm finally back again. My body's anxious.
The doorbells rings and I'm greeted with the sound of an opening door. A smile stands waiting. The smile is quickly returned. My arms are automatically thrown around his neck and our bodies press together; almost becoming one.
I smile gently once more.
My day has just started. I love you.
