EXT scene: the forest
It is in the middle of the day, the sun is shining, but it is rainy as well. In the middle of the woods, a 16 year old boy is running with a wild and fearful look on his face, his clothes are soaked, but he doesn’t notice them
joel
(opening monologue) So this is me. Running headlong into a forest. For what, I don’t know, for whom I don’t know.
Int Scene: Joel’s Room-early morning
Joel’s room is like every other middle class 16 year old boy: it is covered in dirty clothes and papers, with the walls covered in old movie posters and bands that, according to him, he knew about first. Joel’s alarm goes off for a few minutes without him stirring, but his eyes are open. He stares at the ceiling for a long time, barely noticing the alarm blaring in his ear
Joel
(monologue) I’ve had that dream too many times.
He hits the alarm and goes out of bed wearily
INT SCENE: Joel’s kitchen-early morning
Joel comes to the breakfast table wearing the typical teenage uniform of a black t-shirt with an obscure pop culture reference and loose fitting jeans. The kitchen is relatively old with peeling wallpaper and a yellow 70s-era mustard tint to it. His mother hears him approaching but doesn’t acknowledge it. Joel’s mother, a 52 year old single mother, is still in her nightgown and is quite groggy with a glazed look in the eye
Joel
Morning
Joel’s mom looks up in a daze to acknowledge her son’s statement, but with no emotion
Joel is clearly uncomfortable
Joel
So, the weather seems pretty nice out, today. I think I’ll just walk to school
Joel’s mom approves with the slightest of nods and Joel gets up to get ready for school
Int Scene: School
Joel walks into the double doors of the school. The hallways are incredibly congested and it is obvious that Joel is uncomfortable by the amount of people. He shambles through the hallways, not acknowledging anyone’s presence, but observing the actions and conversations taking place, namely the couples of the school. He walks around the school until he finds his locker which is away from a crowded hallway, into a virtually empty one.
Joel (inner monologue)
I asked them to move my locker here. It’s quieter, it allows me to think.
