"The Eminent Truth"
Maemi Sohma stared out the window. Her dad was talking to her, but she didn’t seem to hear him. Her thoughts were too occupied on her home; the home where she spent the first seven years of her life. Now, she was on the way back there. Her father had finally overcome the fear of living at the place where Maemi’s mother died.
Maemi was a girl the age of sixteen now. Less shy than she had been at seven. In fact, she was an independent soul who didn’t take crap from anyone. Maemi had her mother’s dark, beautiful eyes, and rosy cheeks. Her hair was as dark as night, and as soft as silk. Except for the chunk of hair dyed blue that covered her left eye.
Maemi gave a long sigh, and blew the blue strand of hair up in the air. It gently came back down to her face making her nose itch. She quickly brushed it to the side. Maemi didn’t see any joy in coming back home. The only thing she did look forward to was seeing her best friend again. It was hard for her when they left that cool night. She thought that she would never see him again. However, now, she would get the chance, she hoped.
“Maemi, are you listening to me?” asked Hisoka, Maemi’s father, finally noticing her abnormal silence.
“Huh? Um...yes, of course To-san.”
“You know you are horrible at lying.”
It was true. Maemi was the worst liar. She always had this look in her eyes that you could tell exactly if she wasn’t telling the truth. Not only that, but through her eyes, you could precisely know what mood she was in.
“Fine, I wasn’t. I was just thinking about all of this moving stuff,” she confessed.
“That’s okay sweetie. I’m a little nervous myself. I don’t know how the family is going to take it.”
Oh yeah, thought Maemi, my family. Maemi came from a very large family. She had so many cousins she couldn’t count them all.
“Don’t worry though. I’m sure we’ll be welcomed right back into the family. Everything will be back to normal.” encouraged Hisoka.
Maemi knew this wasn’t true. Nothing would ever be the same.
A few hours passed, and the car rolled down the gravel drive of the Sohma estate. Maemi crawled out of the car, and looked at her old house. It was the same as it was when she was seven. Soon, memories were flooding through her. She smiled. Her life here wasn’t too bad, until the night of the accident. Maybe now it will be normal again. Nonsense! thought Maemi. A soon as the moving truck was unloaded Maemi stepped outside. She gave out a long sigh. It was time to see him again.
Maemi walked down the long pathways of the estate. She tried to remember her way to his house; the house that she had visited so many times. After wandering for about fifteen minutes she saw it. Eagerly, Maemi ran up to the door, and knocked twice. There was no answer. She knocked again. Disappointed by no response, Maemi turned around and sat down on the doorstep. She lowered her head.
Suddenly, a high-pitched, joyful voice cried, “Maemi, is that you?!”
Maemi looked up to see a boy who was exactly her age, despite his height. His golden hair curled by his ears, and his deep, blue eyes glistening at her. A look of shock and happiness lay on his face. Maemi stood up, and smiled. A smile spread across the boy’s face too, and tears formed in his eyes. Unexpectedly, he ran up to Maemi, and embraced her. Maemi hugged him back.
She was truly home.
