There are NO Gains without Pains.

I always enjoyed mornings. They were the only time I could escape; there were days when I really needed to escape. Sometimes the mornings weren’t enough. This morning I wasn’t feeling the burden of the world on my shoulders. Surprisingly, I felt rather...jovial. After I got out the shower and prepped myself for they day; I kissed the wife good bye and left for the office. A man’s gotta make a living if ya know what I mean. The drive downtown to my real estate office wasn’t long. My driver kept the conversation light. I didn’t like heavy topics before I had breakfast. And, there was only one place that did my breakfast just the way I liked it. We’d stop by and pick it up on the way into the office. They knew I’d be coming for it. I always came by without fail seven thirty every morning to pick it up, along with a few extra titbits. By eight o’clock I walked into my office, my secretary was waiting for me. She gave me a slip of paper with the number I’d asked her for. She really was a jewel. I gave her a kiss on the check just for the heck of it. Told her she did a good job around the place too. I’ve been considering giving her a raise for the past month now. I figure I had another month to go before I made any final decisions. It was give her the raise, keep her around longer or let her go. I didn’t like getting attached unless I decided it was for the long haul. She’d proven to be worth it so far, but you never knew what the future could bring. You always had to be prepared for the unexpected. That was the lesson I knew better than the rest.

What I hadn’t expected was the events that occurred last night. For some reason, I’d been starving. could be due to the fact that I’d skipped lunch. Usually, I’m particular about where I eat. But, I let the boys stop by this little diner so I could grab something to eat. Instead of just letting them bring out something to eat, I went inside. That’s when I saw her. She had a pretty face, a bit on the heavy side- - so I thought. Happens, she wasn’t heavy at all; least not the way I thought. She was pregnant. Surprised that I found her attractive even through her pregnancy. Now, that was something I hadn’t expected since I did everything in my power to keep my wife from getting pregnant. I kept telling myself I wouldn’t be attracted to her anymore, but the truth was I had long ago stopped being attracted to her. I just didn’t want her to carry my kids in her womb. We both were forced into this marriage. She didn’t love me any more than I loved her. We tried for love the first few years. But, we weren’t in love with each other. Not the way a man and a wife should be. But, I knew what an asset she was. She knew what a gold mine I was. We complimented each other and refrained from making things too personal. She had a lover; I know. I’ve known it for some time. Found I couldn’t begrudge her; her love. Not when I slept with more than my fair share of women.

My mind wasn’t on my wife. Instead, I couldn’t get the waitress at the coffee shop off my mind. I told her to take a load off after she’d served my feet. She would have argued if I hadn’t insisted. Eventually she sat down. I’ve been told I have that gift of getting people do what I want. Persuasion. It had always been my biggest asset. Back to the lady, Sophie was her name. Back to Sophie. I urged her to sit down to keep my company while I ate dinner. She had. I found myself immensely relaxed by her presence. That was a surprise. I rarely let my guard down. Yet, it seemed natural to do so with this pregnant woman. We spoke about her child and small things just to pass the time. Neither of us went into much detail. She hadn’t really prodded so I didn’t have to really share anything. I left when my dinner was over. As far as I was concerned, that was it for Sophie and I. But, I found two hours after leaving the diner and the more than generous tip the blonde woman was still in my mind. That’s when I had one of my guys call the owner of the restaurant to get her number. They’d been instructed to leave her number at the office for me this morning. Which, was what I picked up when I walked by my secretary.

This morning, I had a few extra hours before things kicked into gear. I set my black jacket behind my chair before sitting behind my desk with my breakfast in front of me. Today I wore a Turquoise Arizona Poplin Western Shirt off of Ralph Lauren’s Black Label. My suit also came off the Black Label; the break down was the black Dylan Cotton Pinstriped pants and with the matching Western Cotton Twill Blazer. They both fit me like a dream. Which wasn’t usual given my height and built. In fact, it was hard for me to find clothing that fit the way this suit did. Once my wife realized this what a good deal she’d purchased; she began to order my clothes custom made from various store online. It made my life much easier. Instead of going in stores and dragging out the process she did simply did it online. Considering fashion wasn’t something I particularly enjoyed; I hadn’t complained over the change. Even though I didn’t enjoy shopping I did enjoy looking good. Which was why, my wife made a nice stipend for her extraordinary taste when it came to buying my clothing. I had to admit the woman had an excellent eye for what I looked good in. Considering how long we’ve been married I would only expect she knew what looked good on me. I could do the same for her. But, I didn’t have to. She had it all under control.

Looking at the phone I placed the paper down in front of me and dialled the number on it. Putting the phone on speaker, I signalled for the boys to leave my office and close the door behind them. Picking up my fork I dug into the eggs on the plate in front of me. I was on my second forkful when her voice filled my ears. I could hear the question in her voice. She’d be surprised. I didn’t know why that made me happy; it just did. I enjoyed surprising people. “Good morning,” my voice was calm, controlled, “ I trust you and the babe are well rested.” Did I expect her to know who was on the line? No of course I didn’t. But, by not revealing my identity I managed to snag a few more minutes on the phone with her. I took a few more bites of the eggs before breaking off a piece of bacon and toast. I knew this was pointless, still I had a desire to know she was okay. Being a protector I always did what I could go offer my protection to people. Even when they didn’t know they needed it. And, this woman needed some protection even if she didn’t know it.

I made the decision, while waiting for her to answer to be her fairy godfather. I didn’t need anything from her. Something in me simply wanted to make sure she didn’t have a need for anything. I’d have to get one of the boys to check up on her. Follow her around for the week. Nothing to alarm her. That was the last thing she needed in her current state. Instead, they’d just be someone to ‘watch’ out of her. It was barely nine thirty and I’d already laid out my good deed for the day. Damn if I wasn’t proud of myself. Now, once I was done with the pleasantries I could get focused on the more pressing matters. This woman was only a passing bee sting. I was sure in a few hours, maybe days at the most, I’d be over it.
