Kayla groaned. “Please excuse me,” she said and trotted down the hallway. She took in a few breaths and then opened the door with a smile. The door swung open to reveal a rather tall and handsome man. He had long silver-white hair that he allowed to fall freely over his shoulders. With his brilliantly blue eyes he stared down at her. He was dressed very differently from her. In a town like this he would certainly stand out. He simply wore white formal robes.
Kayla’s heart stopped; she was paralyzed from shock. How did he know where she was after all these years? After a few seconds the panic set in. “Why are you here? How did you find me?” The man was about to speak when she yelled at him, “just leave me alone and don’t come back.” Before the man had a chance to even speak she slammed the door in his face. When she turned around she found James towering over her, giving her that dark look.
“Who was it?” he asked her. Kayla shook her head not wanting to answer the question. Unexpectedly she fell against him and wrapped her arms around his chest. James stiffened. She didn’t seem to be attacking him in any sort of way. In fact it looked like she just needed somebody to hold her. So he did. “Kayla you’re scaring me,” he said in a whisper. “What’s wrong?”
Kayla looked up at him and smiled. Before he could do anything, she reached up and kissed him. The somber mood was now forgotten. James’ eyes seemed to lighten. After their kiss ended James pushed her away. Just as he was about to ask her what was going on a figure appeared behind her. James blinked a few times, hoping he was just seeing things. When the person never disappeared he stumbled back a few.
"Wasn't that a bit rude?" The silver-haired man said in a near growl. His eyes darted to James. "What the hell are you doing with him?
Kayla frowned. It didn't' make any sense, why would he care what she was doing with him? "Joanus, this is a rather bad time," she started. Any time was a bad time for him to show up. Joanus was a thing of her past; a past she had hoped never to revisit. Right now her past was catching up to her. There was only one reason for him to be here; to take her away. He was going to lock her up again just like he did all those years ago.
Panic worked its way to the surface. Kayla couldn't control it she couldn't hold it back. There was no place to run. She was about to cry out and flee to where ever she could when she felt James' hands on her. "Yes, Joanus, we're not accepting guests at the moment. If you would leave, the same way you arrived," James waved one of his hands at Joanus indicating his act of appearing out of nowhere. "Teleporting, or whatever you want to call it." He glared for a moment. "I'm sure we'd be happy to have to you come back later. Much later." James eyed the man waiting for him to make a move.
Joanus smiled and shook his head. "I'll be leaving, boy, but not without my dear Kaylan." It only took him a few strides to reach them. He grabbed a hold of Kayla. Before she could blink, James had Joanus pinned against the wall.
"I don't care who the hell you are and where you came from, but if you dare lay a hand on her I will personally skin you alive." Kayla shuddered under James' touch. Suddenly he seemed a lot more threatening than she ever thought he could be. She remembered the look he had in his eyes earlier. Their ferocity matched his tone of voice. Being on the other end seemed to be a bad spot. Even though she knew Joanus to be of much power, something told her that James could live through anything Joanus threw at him.
With a smirk, Joanus crossed his arms. "Let's see you try."
