What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

- Max looked over at James before turning his gaze back to Alex then Maiko. “ Okay, if you say so babe. But, if he’s doing something to make you uncomfortable then you let me know. I don’t want him crowding you and making you feel uncomfortable. People might begin tagging your name together and we know what a playboy Alex is.” He grinned sheepishly at Maiko, “ you can always com e and sit by me Maiko, you know I won’t do anything you don’t want me to. My friend however, doesn’t live by the same rules.” Max had to shake his head at that sad truth. He knew Alex wouldn’t do anything a girl didn’t want in fact he rarely did anything. The man took a million years just to get a girl’s number. It was almost frustrating to watch Alex. And, Max was no fool. He had picked up on the way his friend had been looking at Maiko for the pass months. He knew the rules to the game and those two were definitely playing. But, it was a tricky and tangled game they were planning. In the end, he wondered what would win out.
Alex tossed his arm around the back of his chair smiling at his friends, with a cocky grin that was only seen every so often. “ I don’t know why she would leave my side to sit by you Max. We all know about your reputation. Besides, she’s pretty safe right where she is.” Alex was playing along with his friends, but at the same time he was sending out the signal. Max had set the scene up and Alex fell right into his plan. He hadn’t even realized it until he saw the look that James and Max shared. Damn, he hadn’t imagined he would be sharing that bit of information with them so soon. Max was grinning still, but James didn’t look too pleased with what he had just learned. But, they hadn’t learned anything really, they were simply grasping at straws.
“ Anyway,” he pulled his hand from behind Maiko’s chair letting his fingers brush the back of her neck as his hand fell, “ I had one of those famous gatherings to attend this morning.” Rubbing the back of his neck he shrugged his shoulder as if allowing the weight of who he was to fall off of his shoulders for a few moments. It didn’t work, as soon as he lowered his shoulders Alexandri O’Donnell was right back in place. There was no escaping who he was. Not, in this town and not any time soon. Even if he was not the O’Donnell son, his future was just too bright for him to hide under some rock. He was going places and everyone knew it. He knew it. But, no one knew which direction he was going in but him and he liked it that way. A lot of people were calling him a puppet to his father’s vision, but Alex had visions of his own. Visions that were shared with two other males; they had their plans and everything would eventually be put into perspective.
They would never discuss business in front of Maiko, however. That was something that was reserved for their private meetings. And, they had them twice as much as they had these small gatherings of five that often wound down to four.
“ Your mother still have you wrapped around her finger ey? I wonder how your father would have managed if your mother wasn’t there to keep you under his finger.” That was Max of course. Always too the point, the man didn’t care about if people were offended by what he said. He always spoke the truth. It was like some law or code he lived by. And, if you were put off by what he said, then you had to deal with it. For Max, it was simple the truth shouldn’t be offensive. It was the truth and he almost always spoke it. Which was why it was so amazing to Alex that so many women welcomed him into their bed. He wasn’t a man to settle down. Or, at least he had not yet, met a woman that made him even think about having a serious relationship. Life was just crazy that way.
Alex ran his hand down the leg of his pants, “ who knows, Max. Who knows?” Those five simple words indicated that subject was closed for the evening. Max enjoyed the truth but he was no fool to push a closed issue.
“ I’ve met an amazing musician.“ Max frowned at the groans, “ it’s not what you’re thinking! I’m talking about a student. A girl about seventeen, really I mean I enjoy women but I’m not going to pick up on a kid! She just is an amazing player. I think she had music just pouring out of her ears. The things she comes up with. I wish I could convince her parents to send her to a school where she could fine tune her music. But, at the same time I don’t want her to loose the wild creative skills that she already has.”
And, so the next fifteen minutes was spent talking about the young girl, young musicians, music schools and the arts.
