Welcome to the darkside...
The Weekly Rant LXV -lawsuit obsession
Well, the MMO isn't out yet, so I guess I'll keep this going.

People are too eager to sue eachother these days, It seems you can't say/do/write/joke on/publish/have an opinion about anything without some money-grubbing jackass screaming copyright nonsense.

"It was MY idea!"
"that's a rip-off of something we ripped off of someone else!"
"That looks vaguely familiar to something we might have had some small hand in!"

I think the problem is that people are so damn greedy, any way to make money, no matter how morally bankrupt it may be, is now ok. What's easier than saying someone robbed you or offended you in some way to get money? Around christmas time, people go nuts over a light-up santa clause on someone's roof, people can't take something old and improve it, say, the light bulb, without the inventor (or his descendants) calling foul, even though they wouldn't have graced the world with this new addition in a thousand years.

Think about this; someone invents a device that allows you to walk on ice without slipping, but doesn't just have tons of friction on the soles of your shoes, decades later, another man looks at this device and figures out how to adjust it so that it can be used to walk on walls. Should the original inventor get more money for something he didn't do? True, the later inventor would have to give credit to the guy for opening the gate to this new invention, but still be able to keep the money made for coming up with it.

It's like a cave-man being angry at a medevil knight for making an axe out of metal, a change to the sharp rock tied to a stick.
"Ugh! rugga rugga! hagamogga ugh!"
"that's just a fancier style of my idea!"

The axe was improved, both parties (though they'll never come in contact) should be happy to have a better tool with which to cut, chop, and mutilate foes, but no, these days it's all about the money that can be made from a good idea, not using that idea to help people.

BOTTOM LINE: Credit to the old inventors should be given, but the saying is "give credit where credit is due" not "give all the credit to the last guy, even if he only set up the first domino". If someone improves what you've done, but says it was all thier idea, THEN you sue, got it?

That's this week's rant, I'm Varmeip, Goodnight.
