Chapter 2
I hopped out of the carriage, waiting for Serena to follow suit. She unhappily shook her head, and the carriage turned around and headed back towards our house. I turned around, trembling, and walked through the extravagant entrance. I could hear the council members quietly conversing in the higher levels of the courtroom.
“Ahem. You are 1 minute late, Miss Serenity Black. Please step up to the pond, now. We mustn’t waste anymore time. Now remember your rules, and your task will be entered into your Death Tome. Hurry, hurry,” a familiar voice commanded. I looked up to see Matsuda standing by the pond, or the entrance to the Human world. He looked the same as usual, pale white skin, colorless eyes and hair, blood red robes and black sash. He had several gold markings of crescent moons on his face, strategically placed.
“Yeah, I know. I sort of slept in a tad. You know, the celebration was only last night,” I murmured quietly, so only he could hear.
“Yes, dear, I know,” he said quietly. Then raising his voice, “Okay, off you go Serenity! Make the council proud and return ASAP.”
I walked into the pond of essence to take me to the Human world. The familiar sensation of floating through nothingness enveloped me, then I spotted a white door in the distance. My beautiful, lacy black wings became visible again, so I could fly to the door and arrive faster. This was my favorite part, the feeling of being so free. As I reached the door, 3 feet in front of it, something grabbed my ankle and twisted it, pulling me back. What was happening? I opened my mouth screaming silence, fighting my way towards the door. I materialized my staff, and cut off the hand of the thing grabbing me, and barreled through the door, appearing in the human world. Frightened enough to be frozen here forever, I started crying.
What was that? I saw the hand still dangling on my ankle and I shivered. I banished it from my thoughts and it disappeared. My sobs lengthened, getting more and more oxygen deprived, my lungs felt like bursting. My wings and staff had disappeared again, so I looked like any normal girl sitting in the shelter of the night crying. That was when I started to notice where I was.
There was a huge willow tree towering above me, its leaves dancing mysteriously in the breeze. I saw a swing set in the distance along with a tall metal slide. Benches were on the edge of a sandbox, and there was a sidewalk surrounding the park. I read a sign and found out that this park was called Willow Angel Park. How strangely familiar. I decided to sleep under this tree for the night. I pulled the photo of Michael and I out of my purse and studied it. In the picture, a huge willow tree had been behind us, almost like the one I was leaning up against this very moment. I dozed off, holding the picture tightly in my hands.

Light was shining through my eyelids, and I could feel the sun on my legs. It was a cold winter morning, and the sky was a beautiful clear blue. I stood up, and walked down the street to a hotel. The lobby was almost deserted, for there were some guys flirting with a girl that was working at the coffee shop in the hotel. One of them looked almost familiar, but I reminded myself to stay on task and not go get some coffee. One of the employees of the hotel was staring at me from the registration counter like I had a monkey on my head. I saw my reflection in on of the elevators, and saw that I forgot to put concealer on my Shinigami markings. Pulling out a credit card, I walked up to her and started going through the process of getting a room.
When I got to my room, I started teleporting my belongings to the room, everything from clothes to entertainment and stuff for “school”. I didn’t exactly know what I would need for my stay here in the Human world because they didn’t tell me what I was doing here. That was when I remembered Matsuda saying something about my directions being in my Death Tome. I glanced out the window, then pulled out my tome and turned to the first page. It read:
Serenity Jae Rose Black, You have been sentenced to spend 6 years in the Human Realm because of repeated mischief in Midnite. See you in 6 years.
I was flabbergasted. Absolutely speechless. A sentence? I hadn’t done anything really bad back home, so this came as a huge surprise. What was going on? Was that why Serena had looked so unhappy? I pondered these things while spiraling downward in misery. 6 years was a long time to be in the human world. A really long time. They really did this, that was why they sent me to a park that was somehow familiar. I would live the same life I was living while I was here a year ago. I decided to go get some coffee, and dwell on my living situations. I’d have to rent an apartment soon. Or maybe room with a friend that I might make here? Oh this is so complicated.
I trudged down to the lobby, my face downcast. I ordered some straight black coffee and a pistachio muffin. Stirring my coffee repeatedly and nibbling on my muffin helped me forget about spending years here. I started thinking of the photo that was in my purse, so I pulled it out and stared at the 15 year old me. I was 16 now, and I looked so much different. Back then, my hair had been white blonde and very, very long. Now I had shorter black hair with red and blue streaks in it. In the photo, I was tan because it had been summer time and I had spent a lot of time in the sun. Even my eyes were a light green back then. Now I had really pale skin and my eyes are emerald green. I was much thinner now than I was in the photo. I looked as different as you could get. As I was dwelling on that thought, something very unexpected happened.
“Hey, are you okay? Is something wrong?” a soft voice asked me. I looked up to see crystal blue eyes and a perfect face gazing at me, concern clear on his face.
“Oh. Well, honestly, not really,” I mumbled. He reached his hand towards my face, wiping tears off of it. I hadn’t realized I’d been crying. I looked down and wiped my eyes some more.
“Oh. Is there anything I could do to help you?” he asked, worry in his beautiful eyes.
“Uh, probably not. Plus, if I told you, you’d think I’m crazy,” I mumbled, my voice cracking.
“Well, you can try me. I’m not one to judge. Plus, I think you could use someone to talk to. No offense, but you look really miserable.”
“Yeah, but I don’t even know your name. How am I supposed to even think about trusting you?” I asked him.
His face went somewhat blank, and it looked like he was considering something. Then suddenly, he smiled and said, “I’ll tell you my name if you’ll tell me yours first.”
I frowned, and kept my face empty of any kind of emotion. Should I tell him my real name? He seems so familiar, that I almost feel like I can trust him. But should I? I don’t think it’ll hurt anyone. Oh, what the heck, why not?
“Okay. I’m Serenity Black. And you are?” I informed.
His eyes got wide and his mouth dropped open. He was stunned. I tilted my head to one side, confused. He closed his mouth and closed his eyes and gulped. Then he opened them and smiled.
