~My Stories~
The Locket of Memories
Gwen slowly opened her eyes to a dark beach with a gentle swishing noise that she imagined to be the the ocean that was settled once again. She lay there for a moment, trying to gather herself into her surroundings and find out where she was and what had happened. The crisp, night air, was unusually cold and Gwen sat up, shivering. She felt a sharp twang of pain suddenly hit her head as a throbbing sensation overtook her head and it felt heavy like she didn't have the energy to lift it. She pressed her palm to the side of her forehead and squeezed her eyes shut. She knew she couldn't stay here forever letting her head hurt. She managed to get up, stumble forward a few steps and fall down onto her knees. She couldn't move with her head feeling so dizzy. She signed and thought "My head hurts, I'm lost, It's dark and cold and I'm all alone. Where are my parents? Where is everyone?" She fought back her tears and thinking about her parents gave her courage. Renewed energy flowed into her and she snapped her eyes open and stood up. She needed to find her parents. She looked around and spotted a dark, crumpled heap of wood lying near her. She ran towards it and not long after looking around at all the things buried under the wood, she realized that it was her house. The tidal wave had knocked down her house but somehow she had made it out alive. She still couldn't find her parents so she looked harder until she came across a necklace with a small, silver heart shaped locket attached to it. It was her locket that her parents had given her for her 10th birthday. She had kept it in her drawer all this time, too afraid to wear it for she might lose or damage it. Memories of all the good times she'd had with her parents flooded into her mind and she stifled back a sob. Remembering her purpose, she clutched the locket in her hand and pressed it close to her chest. She would not lose this. It was the closest thing she had to her parents now. She slowly put the locket around her neck and promised herself that she would wear it forever. She gave up on looking for her parents after awhile and concentrated on looking for a warm place she could sleep tonight. She would try to do something with all this wood tomorrow when it was brighter. She lay down in the sand, exhausted from all the searching and closed her eyes, waiting for sleep to wash over her like a wet cloth.
