Development Update 2/4 You guys crack me up. I was tempted to put an entirely generic placeholder, in the vein of: [[general description of development environment]] [[entreaty to users to not give out their password]] [[tantalizing hints about features to come]] in the hopes that I could spawn entirely more generic comments, like some of those added to my placeholder entry, and in the vein of this Metafilter thread. It appealed to my sense of humor... Bugs We're Tracking We're trying to track down a rogue advertisement that is depositing an ad-virus onto people's computers. I've talked with a couple of users, and haven't had any luck... and have also spent quite a bit of time on the site with IE6, just hitting "reload" "reload" "reload" to try and get something that looked like the thing we're chasing. Yes, my evenings are that exciting. So, if you run into this, or have additional information, please let me know if any of the threads on SF or via PM. I'm hoping that we can track this down. I don't have proof positive that it's a Gaia-served ad, but our users are seeing something. Community and Culture So we went through a lot of planning during January, trying to figure out what features were going to do in this coming year. The big one, of course, is Battle, and we have a whole set of things based around that. Moreover, though, we're looking for features that help to build a sense of community -- either making it easier to invite your friends, or find friends that are already on the site, or more ways for you to find people that have similar interests. We're still prioritizing and trying to figure out what makes sense, but some of the upcoming stuff is very exciting. Stay tuned for more details. 	A placeholder, so that later I can appear to be the first one to spread my awesome opinion about whatever it is you're slapping. And here it is: I just got that ad thing today! Figures... first time I used Gaia on IE in months. It wasn't on my computer, but it opened a new tab in IE7 and a box came up. Like an official looking thing. Anyway, the only sites that I had visited on that computer were Gaia and coursecompass.com I know it was Gaia since the computer has a sort of Freeze program where every time it boots, nothing from it's previous boot is there. Like a brand new used computer.

	Generic comment on the fine work you do, and personal compliment about your avatar. domokun wahmbulance EDIT: I haven't seen any rogue ads, but I donate. sweatdrop It suddenly sounds like something from a weird game, where you take up sword and bow and hunt through the site, looking for ads that are hurting users. xd I'm happy about the ignore list fix. I know there are some people that was upsetting. I'll be looking foward to the other updates as well. Especially My Car. 3nodding

	xd here i was hoping i would have something to read before class. oh well, maybe i'll have something to comment on after class today. ninja edit: xd definitely after classes were over...and after dinner. doesn't seem like anything exciting this week (at least to me), but i suppose it would be hard to top fixing Word Bump without something very exciting. more community things? wonder how much i will use such things. it would be amusing to find people who i knew in high school who i know have Gaian accounts.

	Well, a greater sense of community to me always meant more forums, and more ways to share experiences on Gaia. Perhaps Gaia could develop some more specific Forums and Sub-Forums, so users could interact with each other on more interest levels? And perhaps you could have a system where users could post bulletins, much like myspace, where their friends could get a Bulletin message from their friends in their inboxes, kind of like myspace? surprised

	Its good to know that the broken ignore list feature is finally being fixed. It does make me wonder what all the furore was about over the abuse with the ignore list and what was is/has been implemented to end the abuse. CirqueDelFeu said there would have to be a solution before it was fixed, so I'm guessing there has been? There has been no other contact from a Developer or Admin since CirqueDelFeu's initial post in my Thread on the subject of the ignore list. Either way I'm just happy to have it back as it should be now, and I'm sure many other people will be too.

	Hey... so thanks for updating again. Here's my comment: Although I'm being careful and not giving out my password, I'm starting to get more concerned about the possibility of getting hacked. Just recently, a friend of mine was sent a "picture" in an instant message, which she foolishly opened... and it logged her out, apparently sending her password to the hacker...she couldn't log back in and now her items and gold = starter set. Anyways, not important. What is important is my suggestion. I think you should add an "optional" second password for security reasons that can't be saved in a browser... Or, like for instance... my bank recognizes MY browser at home, and whenever I try to log into my bank from my parents house, it asks me a security question first, even though I have the password. Is Gaia as important as my bank account? No, but the X amount of money I spent from that Bank account on Gaia is. It seems like right now, Gaia users are easier to hack than porn sites. And that's just not right. So, if you guys are planning any updates to security, optional or otherwise... please let me or us know. And if you aren't... please do that?

	Witty response to the journal entry, including a request for the journal writer to get a hobby. Mentions of views on the community, and a request for more information on battle. Mixed anger and excitement in response to being tantalized. Several serious queries about new mouths and contest winners ignored by Lanzer in ATA. 	@Generic Luminescence: To be honest, we just decided to put it back the way it was, and then monitor it for further abuse. Better a good fix now then the perfect fix much, much later. @Spirrow: Yah, some additional layer of security (at least one available via opt-in) would be extremely useful, as long as we can make it relatively accurate and unobtrusive -- that is, some mechanism that was always complaining wouldn't really increase security, because people would just ignore it. @Cube B: Kind of lame, geeky joke that only 1% of the people will get. Segue into a well crafted description of the problem that subtly represents the complicated factors behind the bottom line decision. Witty rejoinder that makes you want to buy sweet fat-laden foodstuffs for the Gaia development team.

	Yes Pangrammic, I'm fairly sure it's a Gaia add, as my laptop was infected the next day by these viruses, one of which may be related to the rogue ad: Mactash ABtear Vuundo Those are all virus names that I found upon next bootup, so I don't know which ad it may be from, it might be from an ad that does not show up very often in your cycle. Don't you guys have a list of each ad that you can make pop up on demand or something similar?

	Pangrammic, I believe that is the stance that should have been taken from the very start, instead of leaving it for months and then going with that reasoning. Seeing as it now fixed, it really isn't an issue. I noticed now if you are viewing a thread, and the OP has ignored you the reply button is greyed out. I think a lot of people are going to be confused by that, and mistakenly believe that the thread is locked - though for some reason people can still post. Wouldn't it have of been better to stick to the 'you are not authorised to post in this thread' to save confusion? Maybe this could be addressed via an announcement or in the newsletter? If those even happen any more, the last newsletter was in October last year!

	Hmm... Bugs... How about bots rofl I'd like to be able to see who is actually competing in Durem again and Junk for that matter now... Maybe then trophies would get handed out on time? I think its almost 6 months backlogged again... The new login dialog makes me sad. I had to get one of my usernames changed so that it could login again. I miss my escape characters.... u_u I suppose in some part its good, but from what I understand you can't actually put the escape characters in usernames anymore anyway... xD But no more confusing people with having accounts that appear to have the same name... Also means no more hacker prevention on my main account... u_u I do however look forward to seeing the ignore list working properly biggrin

Please work hard on it <3 I have all of my ads blocked, so, I can't help you there. wink I really hope you guys are also working on making sure that ignored list users cannot also "stalk" the posts of the person who blocked them. I have that issue with a certain user who stalks me constantly, no matter how many times I block them. 	Yea, everytime I turn off my add blocker/graphic bug blocker, I need to in order to customize my avi, these little pop ups keep coming up. But then my anti virus program keeps me from seeing what they are because it closes them before I see whats in 'em. Even though the addblocker is off. Weird. Then a dozen Trojans were found and destroyed like one after another rolleyes
