(( So...my friend challenged me to write a story of how would I respond if he died in front of me.
I was bored and needed a story and took the challenge.
Here goes.
To Shawn. ))
She laughed, walking and leaning into him slightly with laughter.
"Hey! It wasn't that funny..."
Shawn looked away, flushed. Audrey sighed and went back to sipping her Dr. Pepper.
"Whatever you say..."
Audrey grinned at him, looking straight ahead and trying not to laugh. His eyes darted towards hers and for a mere moment they locked, but with an embarrassed guilt, he looked away again.
Audrey put her hand in a pocket, tenatively brushing her fingertips lightly on the items found there. Shawn glanced at her again with a more furtive poise but when he saw her eyes again he began to flush.
It was a beautiful summer day. Birds were gliding on the slopes of the breeze. Trees were hushing each tree beside them, swaying to and fro like nature's ballerinas. Some noises from the city floated on the slopes around them as well. Kin old ladies would smile. A child would come and tug Audrey's backpack, the fat little panda being shook with some of the contents inside jingling. Bicycles whizzed by and soon enough the day had passed, the wind died and the sun was about to sleep.
Her red-streaked hair floated often when the wind would swoop on her shoulders. Coming to a bench, Shawn wiped off the seat for her and she sat. When he sat, he grabbed her hand as he did this. She looked down at her hand but it took a moment for her to realize what had collided with her hand.
"Shawn?"
He loked at her, twining their fingers so they interlaced. It took him a moment to summon up his courage.
"I...l-love you, Audrey."
Audrey felt her hand get clammy and her chocolate brown eyes sparkled.
"Shawn, I----"
"Please just...don't say anything."
Shyly, he scooted closer to her, holding her hand in both of his. He looked at her licking his lips.
"It's just...from the moment I met you, I knew I"d love you. We started as writing buddies and I don't think you knew how much I cared."
He brough their hands up to his heart and leaned closer.
"Just tell me to die for you, Audrey..."
Audrey broke away from his gaze and looked towards the ground.
"Shawn..."
He longed to see her eys look towards him again.
"Say that you love me too...please."
When Audrey drew her attention back to him, she could almost hear him breath. He was close...way too close. Shawn glanced at her lips and again licked his.
"Please?"
Audrey looked troubled, on the edge of the bench and unable to move back any farther without falling off. When she was about to speak, she saw a commotion behind him. Shawn, also hearing this, pulled back. A woman screamed for help and Shawn stood as he saw a man running with a a red handbag dangling loosely from his gloved hand.
"Theif!" she yelped, "Somebody help! My purse!"
Shawn stood dropping Audrey's hand and stepping in the man's path.
"Hey!" he exclaimed, hrowing his arms out wide.
The black - clad man looked unaffected, bowling him over. "Get out of my way, kid!"
Shawn fell backwards, falling hard onto the concrete. Relentlessly, he stood and grabbed the man's shoulder. The burglar looked wildly, snapping around. "I said beat it!"
The man jammed something into his stomach. Assuming it was just a fist, Audrey stood fear constricting her voice. "Shawn!"
His name was followed by a short, sharp, shock, echoing around the park. In another reality, it seemed as if time froze or at least slowed down. But when Shawn staggered back, clasping his bloody abdomen, he collasped hard and fast, helpless on his back. Rapidly, she ran towards him, dropping to her knees at his side. The shooter was now running away.
"Sh-Shawn! No..." She choked, staring into his dying eyes. With frantic hope, she dug in her pocket for her cell. Her fingers fumbled over three keys and she slapped the phone and feeling as if each ring were seconds draining away from Shawn. She whispered to him words of comfort even though all breath was gone. Shawn stared past her head and to the sky, slowly picking out the materializing stars. Tears fell into muddled drops on his blood-stained shirt. A hello could be heard across the line. "Hurry! He's dying! Confluence park! P-please hurry!"
She waited for confirmation from the operator before sliding the phone shut and looking down at Shawn again. "They'll be here...don't worry." She swallowed.
His deep brown eyes gazed up at her. His creath came in wheezes and a hand reached over to Audrey's. "Just tell me to die for you Audrey..."
he stuttered, smiling gently and feeling his eyes roll back in his head and his eyelids feeling like heavy weights. "And...I will."
"Shawn?"
Tears came even more suddenly to her eyes, trickling down her rosy cheeks like cold silvery pearls. With one last intake of air, Shawn didn't reply. The grasp on her hand turned limp and suddenly cold. Audrey froze, sobs forming in the back of her throat. "Shawn!" she wailed brokenly, the birds in the trees scrambling to the air. Audrey sniveled, staring in the direction of the man with deep enmity. Laying her head down on Shawn's corpse, Audrey wept for the loss of her dear, dead friend. Even the siren's steadily blaring closer in the distance could not soother her now. The sun was set on this once beautiful summer day.
