Development Update 10/1
Hey! This journal is updated through the week! So check every so often.

The hot issues that we're working on this week:

Still Have Problems Posting in Forums?
Site Is Slow For You?

UPDATE 10/5
Phew, what a week. We had a brief outage in PMs due to a database server failing. Also, guild post actions should now work -- so go ahead and roll those dice. More information on Monday, I am honestly exhausted.

UPDATE 10/2
Go to forums -- we're using the new layout now. Also, you can turn off Marketplace PMs, although it's kind of hidden -- go to Marketplace, view your store, and then edit it. Under the edit box where you can enter custom text is a notification checkbox for PMs. Yes, it's not an ideal location, but we'll fix that later -- at least you can turn off messages now!

For those that want the messages, we've also increased the amount of information that we provide when you get a marketplace message.

Andylove: Employee Of The Month
Andylove won an employee of the month award from her agency. This came with balloons and presents, which of course got the attention of the office. Spontaneous applause broke out in the office a couple of times, which embarrassed her to no end. She was so embarrassed, in fact, that the entire thing progressed to Pavlovian proportions: at lunch we caused her to run out of the room, red, just by threatening to clap.

She eventually got used to it by desensitization: every 30 minutes someone would exclaim, "You're Employee of the Month!" and then the office would start clapping again. Finally, the day had ended, and andylove was leaving with balloons and gifts in tow. Of course I had to make sure that we paid our final tribute to her, so I yelled, "Everyone, pay attention! Andylove is leaving the building!", and we gave her one final round of applause as she walked out the door.

Yes, here at Gaia, we take care of our own, especially if it makes them blush and flee. But I'm pretty sure she's used to it by now, so please leave her a comment in her profile and give her congratulations.

Forums
We think that we've licked the forum posting problems from last week, but if you're still having problems, please use the support form mentioned in Lanzer's announcement today. We are also rolling out some changes to the topic listing (see ijustworkhere's journal for some screenshots) and fixing some stuff in guilds on Thursday.

Performance
We worked with a number of users to try and track down some performance problems that were being reported. Special thanks have to go here to IndigoRage for giving me approximately, at last count, eleventybillion
  • screen shots.

We tracked a problem down in our CDN (Content Delivery Network) with some servers located in the eastern United States. Basically, anyone on the right half of the country could have been affected by this.

So it's better, but maybe not good enough, so if you're continuing to have problems with site performance (especially if it's taking 60 seconds to 2 minutes to load a page!) please add a response to the thread mentioned above.

    Page Numbers in Long Threads
Some users have mentioned that they'd like a way to e context of the complete page. To easily get the URL for a particular message, just right click on that little post icon just to the left of "Posted: <date>" at the top of an individual message.

The reason that we had to change the URL structure away from pages is that we plan on allowing users to customize the number of posts per page they see, so page numbers don't make much sense at that point.

    Site Outage Sunday Night
The site was down for about a bit in the wee hours of the morning -- apparently our upstream provider decided to do an upgrade of some dark fiber, and one of our major pipes to the internet went down.

    Donators Seeing Ads
We think this problem is fixed -- one of the pages was caching everything, including the ad itself, and there were a couple of other pages with bugs. If you've donated in the past month and you start seeing ads, please let us know -- we really don't want that to happen.

    Bug Fixes
Various bug fixes that will be rolled out by tomorrow:
    - added a disable flag for marketplace PMs
    - fixed a couple of search issues
    - improved the look of the topic listing page
    - fix PM notifications in the announcement bubble
    - fixed some moderator issues
    - moved to higher quality graphics on the maps
    - and a bunch of other tweaks around the site!

  • I think that eleventybillion is a cool word, and I'm campaigning all my friends to use it in the hopes of getting it so popular that it makes it into the dictionary. So far, uptake has been slow, but if both of you reading this could help me in my noble quest by using the word throughout your day, it would be appreciated! Thanks.

Whoo! Yet another journal I am glad to subscribe to. Very informative. Will read it over biggrin

I want my bug fixes asap D: Those are really important ones. By ones, I mean one: The Marketplace PM Flag. I absolutely *hate* that notification on buying an item . I hope to got that's what you're talking about, otherwise I'm going to have to try and block Admin and throw away my PM box. rofl

I was wondering about the URL structure. That is really annoying for old threads which already have all of their links depending on the old structure. Oh well. Whatever Gaia has to do . . .

    Whoot! @ AndyLove!

Oooh, new look on thursday? I'm excited now!

And you're fixing a few guild things? I've got a ton of guild ideas. Have you ever considered making a "Gaia Draw" Oekaki Feature? Or an option to switch between a custom Guild NPC, and your normal account via a toggle?

Or embedding Music or Videos in thread topics in special designated Media topics and allowing users to comment on it?

    I'd like that. XD

A static number of posts per page was one of the things I thought Gaia had gotten right. It makes things nice and predictable.

Thanks for the update. I gave Adnylove my own virtual applause. :3

I'll have to tell eleventybillion other people about it! biggrin

HOORAY! As much as I love the new Marketplace, those PMs every time I bought something were getting kind of..old. So eleventybillion thanks for that one!

i donated about two weeks ago and im still seeing those "Schick" and "Flyff" adverts everywhere ::

    - on the Gaia home page, on the right just under the profile spotlight, same position on the "world" , "community", "market", "games" landing pages
    - at the top of my private message inbox/save box/outbox/sent box

theres also blank white boxes appearing at the bottom of the "My gaia", "Gaia store" landing page

this has been occuring since the new layout was introduced in august. if im lucky, ill get a week free of adverts but no more. it would be nice if users were compensated by given a month free of adverts since we've had to deal with them when we have donated.

EDIT :: i LOVE the new information regarding marketplace pm's its fantastic! exactly what i was looking for when the mp was still being worked on.

A great thanks for the Marketplace PM disable feature. Although I have yet to see it. Maybe you guys to pin this info to the next Weekly Announcement. I mean, it was only recently I found out that I could disable siggys.

I would like to have the option to use the bubble for the PMs in general please. I've gotten use to the little button you gave us. Now the bubble is irritating. [Note: I wasn't one of the people with a problem with the 'new' button.] Also, I've turned off my PM notification and I'm still getting the bubble /and/ the bold button.

And not for nothing, the map could look a little better.... It looks like you guys tried to brighten it. But then maybe you've fixed it and I've just to see the change.

Besides that, you and your team have done a great job so far. Keep up the great job <3

-Edit: Gotta say I love the changes. I found where I can turn off the MP PMs. I've now [yet again] gotten use to the bubble. But my position still stands on the map. Maybe you guys can use better graphics for the Halloween Map-

    >> Oh sh-!
    No more MP pms?
    That's awesome.
    :]
    Thanks a load, guyz. <3

PM Notifications are a big happy-yay, too.
I always missed new pms 'cause I need someone to slap me in the face and tell me I have them.

Thanks Pan for the eleventybillion *adds word to my Firefox dictionary* things you've been doing. Most of the site's been running much better! Games/Towns and profiles are still running slow for me though. I'm on dialup so that might have something to do with it. Thanks much!

Thanks for the updates, I love reading your journal. I would subscribe eleventybillion times if I could; just once works fine, though.

I have a request. I don't know how doable it is, but I was wondering if it would be possible to have an option to toggle Marketplace "ITEM SOLD" and "ITEM BOUGHT" PMs separately. You see, when I buy an item, I don't feel a notification is necessary: after all, I just bought the item. Why do I need a PM telling me I bought it, when I got a confirmation screen that just told me I did?

When selling an item, though, I don't know if my item has sold unless I check my store and see it's gone, or if my gold count goes up (which I might not notice, or I might not know which item was actually sold). Thus, ITEM SOLD PMs are useful to me, while ITEM BOUGHT PMs seem silly. If we could turn off ITEM BOUGHT PMs while keeping ITEM SOLD ones on, it would be fantastic (and also similar to what we had with the old marketplace).

Again, I don't know if the two types of messages are distinguished in code, or if the toggle you built in is hard coded and lacks type determination, but it would be fantastic if you could turn them on and off separately.

    Thanks!
