Hey! This journal is updated through the week! So check every so often.
The hot issues that we're working on this week:
Still Have Problems Posting in Forums?
Site Is Slow For You?
UPDATE 10/5
Phew, what a week. We had a brief outage in PMs due to a database server failing. Also, guild post actions should now work -- so go ahead and roll those dice. More information on Monday, I am honestly exhausted.
UPDATE 10/2
Go to forums -- we're using the new layout now. Also, you can turn off Marketplace PMs, although it's kind of hidden -- go to Marketplace, view your store, and then edit it. Under the edit box where you can enter custom text is a notification checkbox for PMs. Yes, it's not an ideal location, but we'll fix that later -- at least you can turn off messages now!
For those that want the messages, we've also increased the amount of information that we provide when you get a marketplace message.
Andylove: Employee Of The Month
Andylove won an employee of the month award from her agency. This came with balloons and presents, which of course got the attention of the office. Spontaneous applause broke out in the office a couple of times, which embarrassed her to no end. She was so embarrassed, in fact, that the entire thing progressed to Pavlovian proportions: at lunch we caused her to run out of the room, red, just by threatening to clap.
She eventually got used to it by desensitization: every 30 minutes someone would exclaim, "You're Employee of the Month!" and then the office would start clapping again. Finally, the day had ended, and andylove was leaving with balloons and gifts in tow. Of course I had to make sure that we paid our final tribute to her, so I yelled, "Everyone, pay attention! Andylove is leaving the building!", and we gave her one final round of applause as she walked out the door.
Yes, here at Gaia, we take care of our own, especially if it makes them blush and flee. But I'm pretty sure she's used to it by now, so please leave her a comment in her profile and give her congratulations.
Forums
We think that we've licked the forum posting problems from last week, but if you're still having problems, please use the support form mentioned in Lanzer's announcement today. We are also rolling out some changes to the topic listing (see ijustworkhere's journal for some screenshots) and fixing some stuff in guilds on Thursday.
Performance
We worked with a number of users to try and track down some performance problems that were being reported. Special thanks have to go here to IndigoRage for giving me approximately, at last count, eleventybillion screen shots.
We tracked a problem down in our CDN (Content Delivery Network) with some servers located in the eastern United States. Basically, anyone on the right half of the country could have been affected by this.
So it's better, but maybe not good enough, so if you're continuing to have problems with site performance (especially if it's taking 60 seconds to 2 minutes to load a page!) please add a response to the thread mentioned above.
Page Numbers in Long Threads
Some users have mentioned that they'd like a way to e context of the complete page. To easily get the URL for a particular message, just right click on that little post icon just to the left of "Posted: <date>" at the top of an individual message.
The reason that we had to change the URL structure away from pages is that we plan on allowing users to customize the number of posts per page they see, so page numbers don't make much sense at that point.
Site Outage Sunday Night
The site was down for about a bit in the wee hours of the morning -- apparently our upstream provider decided to do an upgrade of some dark fiber, and one of our major pipes to the internet went down.
Donators Seeing Ads
We think this problem is fixed -- one of the pages was caching everything, including the ad itself, and there were a couple of other pages with bugs. If you've donated in the past month and you start seeing ads, please let us know -- we really don't want that to happen.
Bug Fixes
Various bug fixes that will be rolled out by tomorrow:
- added a disable flag for marketplace PMs
- fixed a couple of search issues
- improved the look of the topic listing page
- fix PM notifications in the announcement bubble
- fixed some moderator issues
- moved to higher quality graphics on the maps
- and a bunch of other tweaks around the site!
I think that eleventybillion is a cool word, and I'm campaigning all my friends to use it in the hopes of getting it so popular that it makes it into the dictionary. So far, uptake has been slow, but if both of you reading this could help me in my noble quest by using the word throughout your day, it would be appreciated! Thanks.

I want my bug fixes asap D: Those are really important ones. By ones, I mean one: The Marketplace PM Flag. I absolutely *hate* that notification on buying an item . I hope to got that's what you're talking about, otherwise I'm going to have to try and block Admin and throw away my PM box. rofl
I was wondering about the URL structure. That is really annoying for old threads which already have all of their links depending on the old structure. Oh well. Whatever Gaia has to do . . .
Whoot! @ AndyLove!
