Development Update 9/24
A site this large and complex is a huge project, and while we try to test everything, it invariably turns out that people are running into problems that we haven't seen here. If you have either of the following problems, help us track them down! Especially if you know your way around HTML and the browser.

Site Loads Really Slowly For You?
Ads Showing Up, Even Though You Donated?

The hot issues for the previous week...

Forum Posting Problem
This was a bear to track down. The main problem was that we couldn't reproduce it here... and if we can't reproduce it then we really had no way of knowing if we had fixed it or not. Finally, after talking with a number of users on IM and reading threads such as this one we finally managed to track it down to a problem with our CDN -- content delivery network.

A CDN is a network owned by a company that has servers available across the world that agree to distribute your files for you. We're still looking into this, but it looks like the servers in the UK region of the world weren't serving the latest files, which was causing definite problems.

Login Glitch
The logins were down for about 30 minutes, causing some users to think that they had been hacked. On this one all I can do is offer our apologies -- we were trying to close a security hole that we had found, rushed it, and ended up shutting down logins. Measures are in place to make sure that this does not happen again.

Posting History
This is kind of a good news/bad news situation here. The good news is that the posting history for the donators should now be available. The bad news is that translating the posting history for everyone else is going to take a couple of weeks at the going rate. (One of the things the forum rewrite was meant to do was make everything much faster and more scalable. Unfortunately, this means that the format for the posting history has to change as well).

The problem is that the current method of migrating posting history takes too many resources if the thread has more than 500 replies, and there are quite a few threads like that in our forums. Threads with less than 100 replies are no problem and are converted on the fly, but to convert the others we need to run a background process, and we can't run it at a very high priority because we don't want to hurt the performance of the site in general.

Anyway, we're looking at ways of speeding this up without impacting anyone -- if we come up with anything I will definitely let everyone know. But, for now: we know about the posting history, and we are working on it! Worst case is that it takes a couple more weeks for everyone's posting history to be up to date -- we understand that this is definitely not ideal.

Bugs Being Fixed
- fixed the fact that people couldn't post!
- various moderation glitches from the forum backend rewrite
- some colored names issues in forums
- pagination for threads >= 1000 messages
- some art arena bugs
- bunches of little marketplace and forum issues

UPDATE 9/27
Patch rolling out today that should take care of the ads that donators are seeing. Also, we found a clever solution to the posting history problem... so, instead of waiting, you should be able to access post history now.

UPDATE 9/25
My desk is perhaps not as uncluttered as one might like, and it is frequently littered with the containersdylove crazy. She wants to remove the containers, and somehow does not buy my explanation that my desk is a delicately tuned ecosystem of cans and bottles that must not be tampered with. She'll stand near my desk while we talk and I can see her hands twitching, as if at any moment she'll start screaming and grabbing recycle stuff with wild abandon.

You think I'm making this up, but really, if I'm drinking something when andylove comes up, she watches my container like a mongoose, ready to strike and take it away as soon as it touches the table.

Anyway, I come into work this morning, and the battle of wills has escalated to the next stage. andylove and foobarbazquux had decided to take my pragmatic philosophy to an extreme and "enhance" my cube:

You see the conditions under which I have to work! My revenge will happen, and it will be sweet.

Hey Pan. Just to help out, I offered my two cents on the first link provided.

Now to go report this in my dev update thread. :3

Thanks a lot for all your hard work! Also, thanks a lot for the update on how the post history glitch is coming along.

Are thread links ever going to be by page number again instead of by post number (which isn't always +15 since, last I checked)

Keep up the good work heart

You can tell the rest of the staff I said I'd buy them all lunch for being so dedicated if I had money like that.

Jesus, I wish I had money like that crying

@Chema: I don't know that we'll go back to navigation by page numbers -- it's problematic, since people will be able to have different numbers of posts per page -- but we definitely hear that people need a better way to navigate large threads, so this is something on the list of things to look at.

Well, if you know all of the post numbers for each page already and are just trimming those down to selected pages (first few, last few, etc), you could always make a "Jump to page" option. I know vBulletin has it, phpBB might now, so you probably know what I mean. 3nodding

I really don't know that much about html and such. sweatdrop But, I took screenshots of the places that I do get ads from.

It's so weird. It's like it is working.. but not really. >.>
Since some mentioned "half ads" I see them when writing a PM. It's a gaia ad though so probably not that big of a deal. Link
The other two are just ads around the site that I get.
When submitting a post

Good luck! ;D

ive been experiencing a lot of the same issues regarding the adverts as other users, i just assumed, since i bought it up last month when the layout was changed that it was still related to that.

thanks for keeping us updated!

Two things:

1. I love those pictures. They made me roffle. It looks a lot like my desk at work.

2. Please don't forget to fix the bugs in the games, such as gold granting in Word Bump and the exchange of Credits for scholastic items at H.R. Wesley.

¨*:·.♥.·:*¨

I laughed so hard at the story about the containers and the desk. xd Andylove would probably die a billion times over to see my own desk.

I miss my post history, but I don't mind as long as I know it's being worked on. I can wait a couple of weeks. whee heart

At least you've got a lot of real estate for your bottle graveyard =P
My computer "desk" is really just my brothers dresser, and there's not a whole lot of free room for anything else..but that doesn't stop the 6 people who use this computer from leaving junk here on a regular basis. One of these days, I know I'll come in and not even be able to see the keyboard.

Hey, Pan. (Is it ok, if I call you that?) This is a bit off-topic, but I didn't want to bug you by sending you a PM. I imagine Gaia staff gets flooded with those.

You seem nice and on top of things, so I wanted to ask you about the thread subscription list. When you guys first updated the forums, they went all out of whack and weren't displaying in the proper order. That was fixed very promptly, but then another problem occurred. There seems to be a limit of 150 subscribed threads, now. I and many others have all lost our oldest subscriptions.

I know there have been topics in the SF about it, but they die out pretty quickly due to all of the flamers who just don't get why anyone would need so many subscribed threads. I realize that it DOES seem superfluous, but to minishop regulars, it's pretty common. There are so many amazing shops to keep track of and many are on hiatus at any given time.

Um. Anyways. I just want to know if this was intentional or not. If it was, it kinda sucks that we weren't notified beforehand, as I've only been able to find a handful of the (101) threads I lost. If it's a glitch, then I hope I've brought your attention to it and it will eventually be fixed.

@Lady Pyre: The subscriptions were not limited previously, but that didn't mean that they worked -- past a certain number of subscriptions the page would just abort out. So, there needs to be some limit, but the actual limit is something we can look at depending on server load and whatnot. I'll check into this...

Wish we recycled here. I finally managed to convince everyone here to load their dishes straight to the dishwasher if it was dirty. Perhaps I can convert us to recycle everything now. I have a garage full of old cans that I collected. We never managed to take them to the recycling plant D:
