Development Update 10/8
Hey! This journal is updated through the week! So check every so often.

The hot issues that we're working on this week:
Site Is Slow For You?
Trading Not Working?

If you have either of these issues, please add your input to the thread! We're trying to get reproducible cases.

UPDATE 10/12 -- outage
It rained here in California. This is a rare enough event that people stop and get out of their cars and point at the sky, exclaiming, "Water! From the sky! Have you ever seen anything so strange?"

Perhaps I'm exaggerating a little bit. But the first big rain of the season does seem to bring floody catastrophes, and it happened here -- our server farm was cut off from the outside world.

UPDATE 10/12
Take new store items. Add thousands and thousands of people trying on their new stuff. Watch avatar servers melt down.

Updating avis last night was taking way too long, and it was because everybody was updating theirs at the same time. Should be fixed now, though!

Made more changes to the pages to make them load faster. Users had reported that the quantserve tracking pixel was taking a long time to load for them... so we decided to take it out.

UPDATE 10/11
Made some site tweaks to make pages load faster. Also, there was this really strange bug where some words (such as "windows" wink would cause page formatting to go all whack -- that's fixed.

UPDATE 10/10
Towns went down for a bit -- a bug had been injected due to some changes that we were doing for upcoming stuff.

We fixed the PM problem with the vend refund, so you should be getting your vend refund over the next week, along with a PM. There were a few thousand users that got gold without a PM (so if you're wondering why you suddenly ended up with an extra thousand gold, that is probably why!), but we'll figure out what to do with those users when we finish sending out everyone's money.

Also rolling out tomorrow: a tweak to make the site load faster for everyone.

Gaia Is A Web We All Weave

I received a bug yesterday via a note on my chair. It was from accounting -- they were complaining about the printed order form for MCs. They were complaining because they had talked to users, and users had complained that they had to print multiple pages. So eventually the bug made its way to development, and it got fixed.

If you trace the path of a feature or a bug through Gaia, you'll find that they each take different windy paths before being fixed. Some come from a developer that believes a bug is really important to fix; some come from the artists or accounting or other groups in the company; tons come the moderators; and many come directly from users posting in the forums (for example, the recent fix for dice in guilds came from forum feedback).

I'm not sure I really have a point here, I just find it interesting how input from so many different people across the globe comes together at Gaia.

Site Slowdown

We're still looking at this -- as far as we can tell, users in particular geographic locations are having problems. We're still actively looking at this, and we're working with a number of users to track this down. In the next couple of weeks we're also going to be doing a number of changes that should make the site faster; more information as we get it.

PMs Down For Three Hours

PMs w about 5 minutes. No data was lost because the other computers in the cluster had backups of the information. We failed over to one of the slaves, and we were running without a hitch...

... except later that night the slave went down from about 2am to 7am. Now, we _still_ didn't lose any messages, because we have backups upon backups... but still, the server that the web pages talked to was down, so people couldn't read PMs. So we fixed it (and by "we" I mean "other people did all the work and I'm just writing about it" wink , and then fixed the thing that caused the server to go down, so we should be good.

Oh, The Mail

To keep everyone informed, I logged in and made an announcement -- and since I couldn't remember the password for the NPCs, it being 6am in the morning, I just decided to post it as myself. Ten minutes later, my mailbox was close to maxing out.

I appreciate all the kind mail (and by "kind mail" I mean "all the mail except the people begging for gold and telling me that they hate me" wink . But I ended up deleting a lot of it because I am working with a number of users on speed and performance issues, and I didn't want to lose any PMs due to a full mailbox.

So... my sincere apologies for not responding and rejecting trade requests/friend requests for now. I read the mail, but don't have time to respond to it, at least not until it dies down.

However, to answer the most common questions, and in order, they are:
- the problem with Word Bump granting gold is that it is too easily botted. We're looking at ways to fix this.
- my "flaming Q-tip" is the July collectible, "Fire Flower."
- yes, working for Gaia is great
- no, I can't donate, I'm sorry!
- sushi!

Vend Refund

We're working on this. Some people have already received their refunds (as of last count, 250k people). Unfortunately, the sending of the PMs got bogged down, and we're looking at solutions for it.

Bug fixes rolling out

- mostly moderator-requested bug fixes
- art arena is now up to date -- instead of a backlog, when you submit a piece of art, you will find it quickly approved. So go ahead and post your best pieces!
- some speedups to the posting form, hopefully
- minor tweaks and enhancements

wow you sound super busy, i cant believe that users would actually pm you asking for donations just because you made an announcement, but then again i dont understand why users send dev's or mods or admin pm's asking the same either.

Whoo. This was one of the best updates you've had in a while, if only because so much has happened. sweatdrop

Extremely informative.

Hm, that's really interesting about how different bugs get discovered and fixed. :3

Good job as usual being one of the most informative journals out there for info on what bugs are currently being worked on!

Also, the "giant flaming Q-tip" bit made me grin. lol

Thank you so much for giving some information about recent as well as past common issues. I'll definitely be passing the info on to anyone who needs it, and directing people to post reports in those threads if needed. There used to be a big communication issue on Gaia, and it's definitely made some huge improvements lately! heart

I noticed that a lot of Staffers have been posting Stickies in Q&A to provide information about known glitches, which is really helpful (and hopefully it cuts down on repeat threads a little bit). However, I was wondering if in certain cases, it would be possible to sticky a Report thread in the Bug Report forum for people to provide feedback/reports. For example, that Trading Pass Not Working thread should probably be stickied, because lots of people have had issues with it.

I'm really glad to officially hear why Word Bump's prizes were disabled -- that had been the rumor, but now it's official. Would it be possible for admin's Sticky in Q&A to be updated with that information (or is it not a good idea because then botters may try to take advantage of it)? I only ask because a lot of people ask, and I think they assume the gold/prizes were taken away just because someone was feeling mean or something xd Also, I'm dying to know... why has the Credit Exchange almost never worked?

Also, while it's on my mind... if you don't mind me asking, is anything known about or being done about the game servers? A lot of people (myself included) are having issues with Fishing, Jigsaw, and Cards just all of a sudden going "Oops, server hiccup" and it loses your game and earnings. Even Towns has been kind of bad lately... sometimes it lets you in and other times it just repeatedly gives you "Join Server Failed" messages.

I was able to get my trading pass. ^^ Patience seems to work that best it seems for those type of things.

-laughs- I have several friends that will love to hear that the pace is picking up for the art arena. The only bad news about it is that it sounds like it is a more automatic thing now. :/ Which means more things to report. Oh well.

Anyways, good luck tackling the rest of the bugs. >D

It's not that big of a deal, in fact it only started recently, (and it could easily be because of either 1.) My computer was wiped recently by a virus, and I could be missing a plug-in or something which would fix this problem OR 2.) I use screen size 800x600.), so I wasn't sure if this was worth sending in a report form or not. sweatdrop

When I've been clicking on links that take you to an external page, if the page is larger than 800x600, it won't show the whole page and there is no option to scroll at all unless you close out the You Left Gaia warning bar.

And thanks, Pan, for all the updates and fixes.

@Smaddy: Yah, we've talked about stickying stuff like that, but we're hesitant to make the first page all stickies -- most people won't go to page 2. Still trying to figure out what to do there.

What do you mean by the Credit Exchange, exactly?

We're adding more servers for the games and whatnot!

@Purple Hair Spray: it's more automatic, but just so that the mods can get through it faster. We're hoping you won't see more reportable stuff than you would have before.

@AlysBrangwin: Thanks, that bug is on our fix list.

Sorry! whee I meant the Exchange Credits area at HR Wesley. There are actually 2 issues a lot of people were curious about:

1. Up until the bonuses were recently disabled you could earn the Credits from Word Bump, but when you clicked the "Exchange Credits" button at HR Wesley it has almost always gave a "sorry, this is disabled" message-- I believe it may have worked for the first 24-48 hours after the game was put on the site, and then it worked briefly at another random time, for a few days or maybe a week.

2. For the short time the Exchange Credits feature worked, you could apparently only earn a Bachelor's Cap. People were wondering what happened to the Bachelor's Gown, and the Doctorate/Masters Cap & Gown sets (as pictured in an original ad for the game).

Hopefully you can provide some kind of answer to these issues... sweatdrop

I don't think you necessarily need to make a LOT of Stickies in any forum because too many stickies defeats the purpose. If maybe just the newest/ most important issues were stickied, that could help. There are probably quite a few old reporting threads that could even be un-Stickied, but that's a whole other subject matter. xd And of course there's always the issue of who keeps track of that stuff... gonk

Thanks for fixing that posting problem. You rock ^_^

and on a side note XD

I have put up an idea for the site. And I would like to have some developers notes and/or just comments on it. Its about the journals. I have talked to Fleep about my idea as well. ^_^

I havent put up or worked on the actual posting and petition of it yet. But I have put up a post about my idea to see what others think about. I still have a few things I have to work on. such as pictures and such

but here is the Url

Yet again. you rock.
