After many days of waiting, I finally walked outside again. It was a beautiful
summer day again. The kind of day they didn't want to let us outside. They knew
the disease was easier got in sunlight, but they assured us we couuldent catch it so
quickly and that they would let us back in soon. I walked to the edge of the fence
as I usually did and peered over it down to the roaring ocean and rocks below. The
breeze always felt good, even on rainy days, because of the little air in the
compound. The breeze...another way to catch the disease. After only a few
miniutes, we were all beckoned inside again. I took one last look back at the sun
while walking back into the cold, metal room before the door slammed shut and
made its quiet pssh. It would be another 2 months before we saw the sun
again.
We were escorted back to our recreation area about 3 floors down below the
compound. There were already other kids our age running around, playing, and
lounging. The area itself, being bigger then most of the other rooms in the
compound, once housed many more people. Unfortunatly, they were all taken from
us by a strange disease. So many of my friends had all been taken by it. I walked
over to a pair of benches set up over by the basketball court and sat down, staring
up at the dimmed lights.
What I remember is so distant from the world I once loved. It was an experiment.
No one had the proper knowledge. No one could have seen what was coming.
Government agencies attempted to creat new humans. Perfect beings. Unable to
catch diseases, colds, get scratches or wounds...superhumans. They created a
serum that gave humans these traits and even made their skin impenatrable. It
was a happy time for American soldiers. Happy...that word isn't used around here
anymore. Anyway, many parts of the world approved of this serum and began
administering it to the public. Fools. The serum had a huge backfire in humans. It
caused bubbles of air to form under their skin and slowly inflate, removing all of
the skin from underneath the bubble, revealing pure flesh. The bubbles would fill
with blood and eventually, the victims would die from blood loss. But that wasn't
all...The blood that had pooled in the bubbles had become contaminated and
released a strange, alien virus into the air upon the bubbles bursting. Anyone in the
immedate area of a "popping" victim would be almost instantly infected. It spread
through the U.S. quickly and so many people faced very painful deaths. Many
people panicked and riots broke out which only led to more killing and more
disease. Those who could be were evacuated from major countries and states. The
disease quickly became a world-wide epidemic. Not only did many world leaders
die before they had the chance to respond to the siatuation, but they did not know
how to. Confining the population was the only hope, but they had no way of
knowing if the disease could travel through the smallest cracks or not. Scientists
attempted to create anti-bodies for the disease, but before they could solve
anything, they had all been killed off themselves. Those who were evacuated were
placed in a special compound on an island 146 miles off the coast of Florida.
Most of the evacuees were infants or children of a young age, however, very few
middle-aged men and women made it to the evac.facility. I was 4 at the time of
deporting. We had come together as a family. We all knew, however, that it would
not take long before the disease would travel over the ocean and trap us in our
facility forever. We all knew we were living not only in our homes, but in our
graves.
I do not remember my name. I know it was a beautiful name that began with an I.
I wished I could remember it on a day like today. Of all day's...my birthday. I was
finally 17. I stood up from the bench and walked down the side of the room, where
two boys were fiercly competing on a GameCube. They had began to attract a
crowd of people, all shouting "C'mon Derek! Beat him!". I looked at the two young
boys who were playing. One's name was Derek. Apparently, Derek thought
everything was his unless he told you it wasn't. many of our favorite games and
devices were taken into hiding because we all tried to fight Derek into giving them
back to us. The other one's name was Oliver. Oliver had been friend's with me
since I could remember. His hair was a deep brown and he wore very thin small
glasses. He always, like the rest of us, wore his uniform, a black tank-top with
brown, multi-pocket pants. But Oliver had always wished for something to make
himstand out in the crowd, so for his 15th birthday last year, the administration
gave him a black belt. He had'nt taken it off since the day he got it. Oliver and
Derek were engaged in a heated battle of SuperSmashBro'sMelee in which Oliver
and Derek were the same charachter, but oliver had 4 lives left, while Derek only
had 1. The kids kept rooting Derek on as he managed to knock Oliver finall off the
edge, eliminating on of his lives. But his victory was bitter-sweet. Oliver's
charachter returned to the arean and after charging another attack, he quickly
eliminated Derek. The crowd of kid's seemd to dissappear as fast as Derek's last
life, and before another breath could be taken in, Derek was punching Oliver's
arm. "You stupid cheater!" He cried out loud, "You only good at this because you
cheat! I hate the game anyway!" He said angrilly throwing down the controller and
walking grumpilly over to the benches to where I was just sitting. After Putting the
game neatly away in it's case, Oliver stood up and re-adjusted his glasses. He
looked up at me, "Oh, Hey I." He said. That was my name. Until I could remember
it, my name was I. "Have you been outside, lately? I heard it was sunny
today!" "Yeah. It was. There was a breeze too. It was quite beautiful. Why didn't
you come, Oliver?" "Oh yeah, I. Like I could walk away from a challange from
Derek!" He said in a competitive tone like he liked to do. If there's one thing oliver
hated, it was passing up competition. "Hey, I, look, Coats." he said pointing to two
men walking through the double doors of the room and looking around. The held
up a hand and shouted "ID:C101666! Report!" Unfortunatly, if the Coats called
your ID, You knew you were in trouble. Also Unfortunatly, it happened to be my
ID. "I, whatcha do?" Oliver whispered in my ear. "Hell if I know..." I said walking
disdainfully over to the coats. I showed them my forearm which displaed in fine
ink the number C101666. The Coats nodded and said "Come with us. We need you
to see the administrator." One of them grabbed my arm and pused me ahead of
them, leading me down a dark hallyway. I had never met the admistrator in all the
years I had been here, but I had a gut feeling that something bad was about to
happen.

The end is near...
Even a man who is pure of heart
and says his prayers every night
may become a wolf when the wolf-bane blooms
and the autumn moon is bright
