When my Grandmother died, I wasn't given time off. I didn't get to go to her funeral because I had to work and it was out of town. I had to work right after her memorial service. I had to fight to get one night off so that I could be by her side while she was dying.
When Judy's husband died, she got two weeks off, which is understandable. When Lynette's dog died, she got the day off, which is not so understandable. But when my Grandmother was dying, all I got were the words, "Well, who's going to be here if you're not here?" Then I was told that I owed the two people who each worked 2 hours for me. Needless to say, I never paid them their 2 hours each because, now, it's not even half a shift.
But I didn't expect anything because I never thought that this would be the kind of job where you would get condolence cards or anything. Then, when Sam's Grandmother was dying, she was being given the same run around. So, when she asked me to work for her, I immediately said yes, knowing the kind of situation it was. So, today I come into work and I see a card. I didn't think anything of it, but then Judy came in and it turns out that it was a condolence card for Sam and her family. I signed it, of course, because I do feel really bad for her and her family and wish them condolences and I have nothing against her and her family.
However, I was left wondering, "Where is the condolence card for me and my family? My Grandmother died too and I've worked here for almost as long as Sam has. Why didn't I get a condolence card back in the beginning of February?"
So, Thanks. Thanks for putting a lot of unneeded stress on me when my Grandmother was dying. Thanks for making it so that I had to work right after her memorial service. Thanks for making it so that I couldn't go to her funeral because I had to work during it. Thanks for giving me no regrets for quitting. Because I've realized just how bad you treated me as a worker.
I know that you're thinking, 'She never asked for time off for a memorial service or for a funeral.' Well, let me help you to see past your confusion. Ten words were still very fresh in my mind and they still are very fresh in my mind.
They are, "Well, who's going to be here if you're not here?"

After hearing those words, you generally don't get the impression that you're going to be able to get time off. Let me repeat that for you.
"Well, who's going to be here if you're not HERE!"
